    Talking Program ideas

I need some inspiration of a program to make, whether it's a request or just a good one to make.

    Thank you.

    Re: Program ideas

    hi,

I have an idea, i have a collection of CDs these have MP3 files on them. the file structure is almost identical on each of the CDs with a few exeptions that can be excluded. i would like to add the data to a DB and be able to reference them. each CD has a number, each batch of CD's has a case No.

I have previously writen a program for this. it had a few bugs but worked to a degree but have since lost the code and have not had the time to re-write it as yet !!

i ultimatly would like to change the Tracks from Track-1 to say "dancing queen" (Only example i could come up with), however as these are in MP3 format i have had no luck in doing this previously.

I was thinking that there may be a way of converting them to WAV and then loading them as a CD using Deamon Tools and use the new CDDB (Forgot the new name for this) to obtain the CD data.

    what do you think ?

    thanks

    David

How about building a Code Library for yourself to store nifty tips, tricks and code that you might need at a future date.

    Re: Program ideas

I had posted this idea in another similar thread a while ago but here it is again:

Create a set of .NET classes that support HL7 message formats. Sell it for $999 per-seat developer license ($499 if you act now!). Then create an application suite complete with web services that works with them. Sell it for $499 per user ($299 if you act now!) plus additional annual support fees ($2500/yr sounds reasonable, no discount here though). Sell about 1000 of each in your first year and you're talking serious money, over $1M in sales. Sell your company for $5-10 million to a healthcare venture capital firm. Enjoy the beach.

    Re: Program ideas

You could learn a new language until you have the need to program something; maybe .Net? Should be familiar enough.

The problem I've always seen and had with these kinds of random, small projects is that they don't challenge as much as they should. It's like playing risk or chess by yourself, against yourself. You're playing and you're thinking, but you get engrained into doing it the exact same way over and over again becuase nothing about it is really challenging you.

Go outside, go to the mall, hang out at the park and think like an inventor. Spend some time noticing the small stuff about other peoples day to day experience that they have just come to accept. Eventually, you'll find a project and chances are - it will be challenging. These are the kinds of projects that offer the most rewarding experience in return. You noticed a real world problem, thought of a real world solution and executed it. No amount of textbook, cookie-cutter prepackaged scenarios can compare.

    I'm using Visual basic 6.

@All Thank you all for your great ideas!
It's great to get some feedback. I will definetely try and make some sort of CD collection and player! I might try to learn vb.net however, I would like to 'master' VB6 before I went onto another language.

    He was kidding.

I would forget about VB6 if I were you. It will do you no good to "master" a language that, for all intents and purposes, will no longer be used to any great extent by the time you are old enough to join the work force.

I would concentrate my engeries on "master" vb.net

Well anyway, vb.net will be definetely hard to get used to. But I will give it a shot. It will take a LONG time before I can download it. But they!

You can get VB.NET express from Microsoft's site right now and it is free.

    Not even from home?

If you were to show what you wanted to who ever has restricted your machine, I'm sure they would be willing to log on to your box and download it for you.

Only partially. There is an available niche on the low to mid end of HL7 development tools. Many companies balk at paying $5K+ a year in subscription fees for software that often isn't great quality or geared more toward C++/Linux development.

I had thought about doing this myself but I lack the seed capital (money and time) and sales skills to do it well.

    Re: Program ideas

Mastering a language is a rather fruitless endeavour. I suggest learning one or two completely different languages (study a different paradigm, or ditch the languages and go back to basic algorithm/data structure theory) instead. If you're planning a career in programming, you'll need the ability to pick up a language at the drop of a hat; the only jobs you can get knowing one language are dead ends maintaining old systems. Master programming, not any particular language.

As for something to make: we can suggest things that we might want, but that probably won't help you much. If you can't think of anything to make, do some learning. If you think of something that you would like, then make that.
