[Not for the sqweemish] Softball Injury

I had a grounder take a wicked bounce and catch me in the eye last night.
12 stitches
Still swelling and getting worse

Re: [Not for the sqweemish] Softball Injury
I had a friend who's eye dislodged from a softball injury. They were of course able to put it back in - but man the sight was disturbing. When that happened, I pretty much gave up baseball and softball for life. You're lucky the same didn't happen to you.

sevenhalo: Hello, doctor. I seem to have been struck by a softball. This has produced a rather large cut above my eye. What treatment do you advise?
doc: Well, I'm going to take this needle here, and that "thread" over there, and I'm gonna sorta, ya know, stitch you up.
sevenhalo: ...seriously? I mean, it's 2007, doc. You're telling me this is the best we got? Thread? No lasers?
Sorry, I know stitches are effective, they just seem strange to me.

Re: [Not for the sqweemish] Softball Injury
You're lucky! Eye injuries like that can be really serious, so getting away with some swelling and stiches is pretty good. I took a finger in the eye playing basketball. I have a memory of the finger hitting the back of my eye socket, though I suspect the memory is a false one. My eye swelled shut within seconds, and when I was able to see anything my vision was doubled. I went to see an eye doctor, or whatever. With a "praise the lord" after every sentence, he informed me that no damage was done to the eye itself. A detached retina was a very likely possibility for me, and for you, and that would have been all bad.
On the other hand, I have a friend who was missing the cheekbone on one side of his face as a result of having it crushed in a baseball accident. He was relatively normal (well, only relatively, but it didn't have anything to do with the injury), except that he had some sinus issues.
Looks like you'll just have colorful pictures.

At the time, I wasn't choosy, but the thought did cross my mind. He knew his stuff, though.
