If it starts going flaky on you again, note the times, as you did before.

Any consistencies that can be pointed out will help in diagnosing the problem.

Re: Site is impossible to navigate anymore [and it's getting ugly]

Well, here is what I experienced this morning:

    - when navigation was very slow I would hit the stop button and then GO or Refresh button few times and page would load
    - without that I would get the timeout or "page cannot be loaded" or something error.

That behavior includes replies as well but I didn't loose anything - was able to use the browser's "go back" functionality.

    It's fine at the moment.

I'm getting a lot of timeouts today (last one at 9:42) page could not be displayed. Some of the page loads are taking a long time also. I'm using IE7 with tabs I can load a new page from another location in a new tab faster then a refresh on VBFroums.

That corresponds to similar times for me (mine are Central TZ)
8:10 - trying to get into User PAnel
    8:12 - hitting Quote on a posting
    8:44 - just opening VBF

The timeout problem that has been going for the past week or two is still happening at the same clip on my end.

If pressed, I'd say it started at the same time as the new banner was added.

the timing may have coincided, but it's occurring on sites which don't even have the toolbar, so it's pure coincidence

But if the problem isn't found yet, wouldn't it be easier to shutdown the forums for some hours and reset the servers as the problem most probably lies there?
I'd say it's at least worth a shot...

EDIT: With reset I mean reinstall
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

With one site it's easy (more or less) but when you have two dozen or so and everyone of them is ads driven then it wouldn't be as simple.
Also, the advertisers might need to be notified so it's an extreme if you ask me and it should always be the very last thing you do - basically when you run out of idea.

We're not talking about Windows here.

Server issues are harder to diagnose and fix than simply "reinstalling" and it's possible that is a network issue rather than a software one.

It could also be a bad network card or a bad port on the switches etc. Very hard to diagnose and determine. They are aware of all of this and are actually working on the problems. Some changes have been applied and the site is getting better.

No, the sites been puking lately and getting no news (vb wire) which causes the page to hang when loading, can not display page errors, and general very slowness.

It seems the problem only occurs during weekdays. Not weeknights, and not on the weekends. I assume that means the issue is load related.

Re: Site is impossible to navigate anymore [and it's getting ugly]

No JP - I had serious issues during weeknights, weekdays and weekends. Mornigs, noons, afternoons - you name it.
I don't think it's load related - tt could be blazing fast and literally "all of a sudden" "bang!" to a point of no return.
And if I managed to look at the number of users - there will be nothing extra ordinary - the same few hundreed or so.

Re: Site is impossible to navigate anymore [and it's getting ugly]

you mean the timeout issue, or the slowdown? they're two separate issues. I was of the opinion that the timeouts was a hardware issue, but I don't get them on the weekends or at night, which would seem to indicate that its load related. So you get timeouts on evenings and weekends?

To me those two are one issue - there is never one without the other - it's like happy marriage.

Absolutely yes but not necessary at about same time - it's all unpredictable and sporadic.

But their causes are different so we have to view them as separate. And I definitely do get slowdowns without timeouts, and vice versa.

I have been getting quite a lot of "Connection Refused" errors today while trying to browse the forums, particulary trying to view the second page of this thread. First error was about 2:30AM my time (GMT +10:00), and last one was about 2:36AM.

I timed out 3 times trying to get to the last page of this thread.
It has been intermittent for me all day long. This last one was 2:45pm MDT.

This thread is two weeks old and I recall some problems before that as well. How's it coming along?

    Thanks.

That is probably not related to the site specifically, which, by the way, I have had 0 issues with for the past few days.

Anyone been having any problems lately?
