Question what with the different variety of visual basic?

Hi everyone, I'm hoping that this doesn't seems too "noobish" to many of you or that it seems that i haven't searched for it. I did tried to look it up here but couldn't seems to find the right keywords. So here I am, using my first post to at least try to understand the differences.

    The question is this,

What is the differences between Visual Basic 6, Visual Basic 2006, Visual Basic .NET and other variations?

I couldn't seems to find a clear enough explanations of this questions and I want to at least see if I could start learning Visual Basic but as you can see, I have no idea where to start.

Here to hoping that I could find out enough to at least figure out where to start learning Visual Basic.

Visual Basic 6.0, also known as classic VB doesn't use .Net Framework unlike VB.Net which uses the .Net Framework

You can check this site to know different variations of VB from VB1 to VB6 and
other derivative languages of Visual Basic

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_...f_Visual_Basic

Anyway is this your first time to program?

Thanks for the link, the link at least explained the differences between VB6 and the .NET ones.

I haven't really programmed anything but I've played around with QBasic (which I doubt would be useful anymore with it being so old) and the most familiar language that I knows is HTML (and some little CSS). So I don't have any real programming experiences. I went to college for computer science twice but both time, I had to withdraw before I could get into anything programming related.

So this time, I'm trying to teach myself on the free time that I now have cause I had to quit my last job. I'm starting to go stir crazy! and needs something to learns so I thought that it would be good to try and learn some Visual Basic cause I heard that it is a bit easier to learn than C++ but are still very much useful.

You're right, Visual Basic is easier to learn than C++.

If I were you, jump start to learn VB.Net not on VB6 because most functions used in VB6 are supported by VB.Net.

    Learn the basics first.

You can download Visual Basic 2005 Express for free on this link to start learning Visual Basic

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/

Also head to Visual Basic.Net Forum of this site if you have questions while learning this language , Lots of people there will help you there

    Good Luck and Happy Learning!!!

The overall difference between VB6 and VB2005.NET is not big.

As you say you haven't begun yet, I'd start with 2005, because in future it is less likely for .NET to lose compatibility, whereas it is likely for VB6.
-VB6 is already excluded from the Microsoft Examinations.

Above that, I was wondering where you were going to get VB6.
Legitimate versions are nowadays hard to find.
    VB2005 is free.
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

thanks for pointing out which version I should start with

P.S. I just tried to download it through the link from gRob_AndDerSon but on both Firefox and IE, it keeps saying that the download server isn't available. :S I'll try again tomorrow and then look around for some VB2005 guides and tutorials for beginners. Thanks again for the info

I'm not sure if I understand what you means? cause I tried googling the vb.net download and I have not found any other sites that offer VB2005 itself.
(most of the sites I saw is add-on or other VB-based programs rather than VB2005 itself)

Re: what with the different variety of visual basic?

thanks again for the links, i'm not sure why but when i followed the same link from before (but from the microsoft site) it worked. right now I'm downloading it and are currently looking around for a good beginner guide/tutorials (hopefully around 10 page worth (the library gives 10 page free of printing each day for members)) that I could print out at the library nearby.

Hopefully I'll find some good hand on tutorials guide that let me dive right into VB.

Thanks again y'all for your helps
