Dear President Bush,
I call on you as President of the USA not to betray the Kyoto Protocol.
The United States must live up to its commitment to the UN negotiations to prevent global warming. Sabotaging the Kyoto Protocol puts the USA into a position of environmental isolationism and makes it responsible for climate catastrophe.
The US has one of the highest per capita CO2 emissions in the world. People around the world already faced with the first signs of climate change, suffering from floods and hurricanes, expect your country to be in the forefront of tackling climate change.
An enormous potential of creativity, innovation and efficiency is there to be harvested once we have decided to really reduce CO2 emission. If you fail to reverse your decision to kill the Kyoto Protocol, future generations will not forgive you.
President Bush, the science is clear and the international political will is there to tackle climate change. The US must join the world in fighting climate change.
Sincerely,

Ah, the joys of a Republican President. The only time they have a care for the environment is when it directly interferes with their golf game.

damnit katie - why did you have to come and spoil my fun.
On a more serious note, on the day that FOE made this public, the whitehouse servers were jammed with 40,000 copies of this.
Now that's democracy!

Global Pollution
Governments all over the world are avoiding facing up to (and taking the necessary actions on) the world's environmental problems as it involves making 'painful' short term decisions for the benefit of the next generation (who don't vote yet).
At the end of the day though, this is only a reflection of the people they represent. When people have to face up to substantial life style changes imposed by their government (even for the benefit of the environment), many will resist and vote for someone else. Governments know this and therefore only make 'token' efforts that don't cause any short term pain but also don't really make a blind bit of difference.
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.

Believe it or not my parents went through the same thing....worried that my generation...who couldn't vote yet, would have to suffer the consequences of their lack of environmental consiousness. They were right...we are...and we still aren't doing anything about it except worrying that our children's generation will have to suffer the consequences! Nothing changes and nothing will until we can convince more people of the importance of this issue.
