    Thanks for your input guys, I am going to try a few of these ideas.
    In particular 'Ports.Handshake.RequestToSend' as suggested by Andy P. I am also going to look at the RTS/CTS settings too.

    FYI this is how the DOS settings were setup, as I have taken a screen grab from that running program.

    Baud: 9600
    Parity: Even
    Data Bits: 7
    Stop Bits: 1
    Timeout: Off
    XON/XOFF: Off
    CTS Handshaking: Off
    DSR Handshaking: Off
    DSR Sensitivity: Off
    DTR Circuit: On
    RTS Circuit: On
