Are you asking about different programming languages and which are the most popular?

If you are just starting with VB, now is the time to get into VB.NET

VB6 is no longer supported by Microsoft and is gradually being placed by its .NET version.

It's very possible to teach yourself. In fact, it's better to teach yourself because you're then open to several different sources of teaching rather than one constrained one.

Although it does help to eventually get yourself 'certified' with a degree.

    ...Like 'Insane'?

If you are developing with Microsoft technologies then you would want to get a Microsoft Certification. The tests are not cheap but if you are serious about programming then it will be worth something down the road when you go to get a job.

I have taught myself programming from back in the days of BASIC language. Most of the more experienced programmers on VBF have taught themselves.

All the new .NET languages/IDEs are available for free in the Express version for 2005. Just go to the Microsoft site and download.

And don't forget we have sections for both ClassicVB (VB6 and before) as well as VB.NET

When posting your question, make sure you post in the correct section.
