We didn't give 'everyone' guns. I mean, we thought about giving Afganistan guns. But the Soviets beat us to it. And heck, we've never had to give the Soviets guns.
:P
I would say we don't give the Brits guns, but... I know that we do train their Harrier pilots. And I wouldn't say we gave them guns so much as stationed military personel and our entire fleet of B-17s on their island.
Hmmm... now that I think about it... god I hope we didn't give the french guns. That would be embarrassing.

I was under the distinct impression that the harrier was a British plane. I believe the Americans modified it to make it more stable but much slower because very few of their pilots could fly it (without smacking it into the ground at high speed! ).
If so, does this constitute Britain giving weapons to America? Isn't this alot like sending sand to the sahara. I mean, it isn't like their short of guns over there.
Maybe it was the same guy that bought the invisible planes???

Yes, the UK developed the Harrier. And America bought it and has developed the 1B (I think it is called). I don't know what changes were made, but we have had our fill of them. We aren't replacing them, so I understand. When they are gone, they are gone.
But there is only one branch of our armed services that use them, the Marines. Aparently they train the British pilots.

To help all you American's feel better, I'm offering to beat the hell out of any Chinese people I see in london tomorrow. Although if the Special's slam me in the clink, I shall tell them you told me to do it.
On a more serious note, it's a bit of a screw up to us was well you know - them Chinese having that American plane - seen as we exchange intelligence with each other (and therefore equipment) like it was going out of fashion.

Okay... to make matters worse...
I looked at CNN and saw that the Chinese were still looking for the pilot of the F-8 that collided with the spy plane.
Uhm... America is worried about getting its plane back!? Why in the hell are we not helping to look for that pilot!?
You would think, after we killed a boat load of Japanese fishermen (students actually), we would be on our best behavior, especially when it came to Asian relations.
I'm sorry, but if my neighbor climbs up a tree (one that isn't located in either of our yards) to take pictures of me and mine, do you think I'm going to be all that willing to give him his broken camera when he falls out of the damned tree?
Mmm... I'm sorry, but I feel very morally justified in taking the film out of the camera and destroying it.
I also feel that inspecting your camera, since it happens to laying in my yard, is no worse a crime than the one you were perpetrating in the tree. So if you want to complain, I'll bend over and you can pucker up.
And if you complain to much, then maybe I will reconsider releasing the crew. See, to me, they are just people. I would definately want my people back. They are no good to me. They aren't going to tell me anything. No need to make the situation worse by keeping them. But if you complain to much, I might as well hold them for treason. See, now they aren't spying from international airspace. Now they are trying to leave the country with information that will comprimise national security, never mind the fact that they don't have passports or visas.
Mmmm... sorry, I'm rambling. But I really want to go to DC and kick some Senators in the head. We messed up. The crew should've been told to ditch in the South China Sea if we were that worried about getting our plane back. All we can do now, is apologize to China, ask Red Cross to go get our men, and hope that they destroyed anything of value before the plane was commandered. And then, when it is over, we apologize to China again, ask that they return the plane when they are done with it (even if it is just a hollowed hulk), and ask why we give MFN status to the same people we scold for human rights violations.

Active, it isn't a normal plane. It is a spy plane. It has cipher technology on it, technology we don't particularly want to give to the last bastion of communism.
The crew was under orders to destroy the plane, rather than let it fall into the wrong hands. To that end, I think we should have built it with enough ordinance in the bulk heads to leave a respectable crater. After the crew landed, they should've gotten off the plane and warned the Chinese to stand clear.

Hold on now Ciberthug!
First we have offered to assist in finding the Chinese pilot........we were told to get stuffed!
Second.......we were in international waters when the collision occured.
Third........I find it very hard to believe that a prop plane "bumped" a fighter.....one is significantly more maneuverable than the other! Apologize? For what?Should everyone who has a satellite up spying on each other apologize for doing so? We are not alone up there you know!!!!
Fourth.......they should have ditched the plane...You're right but to say they won't let our people free is outrageous. One has nothing to do with the other!
Fifth.........all polititions are buttheads and you have my permission to go to DC and kick some Senators in the head....I think I'll join you!

I was waiting for this thread
The Village Idiot was claiming this morning that China has had enough time to return the Crew and Plane. He did not go so far as to say the crew were being held hostage...hey send in Russell Crowe....even though that is exactly what is happening.
Very worrying....
The Chinese are playing hard ball....hey they should keep the plane, paint it with adverts for the local clubs in Hong Kong, and fly it off the California coast.
The Village Idiot...who would be hard pressed to organise a piss up in a brewery...with the vast majority of the world's nuclear missiles at his finger tips.
Solution
Send in the Australian foreign minister Alexander Downer...bummer man....to handle the negotiations, he will so bore them that they will not only give back the Plane and Crew, but will grant independance to Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Ah, leave it to the media to leave that part out. But... if he is in international waters, we should help anyway.
Second.......we were in international waters when the collision occured.
Yes, and if we had've just ditched into those same waters, we wouldn't have a problem.
Third........I find it very hard to believe that a prop plane "bumped" a fighter.....one is significantly more maneuverable than the other!
Yes, and I don't know about planes, but when it comes to ships, the more maneuverable one yeilds. As I've heard it reports (see above for notes on media accuracies) it sounds as though we were under a routine course correction. The Chinese chase planes simply missed a turn. Probably a rookie pilot not paying attention. I doubt they thought they could accomplish something by bumping.
Apologize? For what?Should everyone who has a satellite up spying on each other apologize for doing so? We are not alone up there you know!!!!
Yes, and we aren't necessarily apologizing for doing it. We are apologizing for interrupting them, disturbing them, and for being stupid enough to 'drop the camera'.
Fourth.......they should have ditched the plane...You're right but to say they won't let our people free is outrageous. One has nothing to do with the other!
No, they don't. I don't know how they became related. Anyway... us yelling isn't going to help. If we make the pretense of apologizing, they let our people go. They only reason they have to keep them is to try them for treason. I don't think China is going to do that, but if we keep yelling, they just might. Anyway... I fully expect that the crew will be returned. They don't offer China anything. I doubt their even being interrogated.
In any case, we lost the plane 'fair and square'. There is no need to think that China is being "immature". And we have no right to consider that plane as US soil. Our embassies and consulates and bases overseas get that honor at the sufferance of our hosts.
Fifth.........all polititions are buttheads and you have my permission to go to DC and kick some Senators in the head....I think I'll join you!

Right on all counts Ciberthug....I wasn't arguing with your logic.....more just a rant than anything.
I just get really tired of being asked to apologize for everything.....Japan has yet to apologize for bombing pearl harbor but we apologized way too many time for the sub incident. I think we'd be hard pressed to find any other country that has apologized for their atrocities yet when the world demands an apology we always do! If we're going to do something that may piss people off we should be prepared for people to be pissed off at us....not do it anyway and then just say "sorry". Either do and stand by it or don't do it at all. We are expected to apologize for our accidents but the rest of the world doesn't even apologize for their intentional wrong doing! We look like and act like total twits most of the time!!!!!!!!

Yeah, Katie, I understand. But just because other people don't apologize, doesn't mean we should be complete jerks and follow suit.
As to Perl Harbor (and all of the War), I dislike 'reperations'. I'm of the mind set that the victors should take whatever they want for the express purpose of repairing themselves. There is no need to make pretense with a court to decide damages and give the loosers the bill.
Anyway... Because of Perl Harbor, I don't regret Hiroshima or Nagasaki (i don't enjoy it, but i don't regret it). And I hope we didn't apologize for those.
Chris, would you like India back while you are at it? What about South Africa? Can't have the states. After we were done stealing them from the natives, we figured, why give 'em to you. :P
