We had a member who had a several problems following the rules and/or doing what the moderators asked him to, and one of them was his constant badgering of people to rate his posts. For that and other reasons he was permanently banned.

Rob, Now you have enough points and reputation in the VB World .

    Re: PM to request Rating

I'm sure I speak for all the people like me who answer a lot of questions when I say that when I spend a lot of time helping someone it's disappointing when I don't get a rating but it's not a big deal and it doesn't stop me from continuing to do it.

BTW ratings should normally be given only for better than average help. In other words while you could theoretically give a rating every time someone answered a question of yours (theoretically because the spread might get in the way) you should really save them for the times when someone does excellent work or goes out of their way to help, so that the ratings mean something when you give them. The same goes for negative ratings when someone is unhelpful.

    I indeed agreee.
The best way is always not to have the darn thing in mind - we are offereing our help voluntarily so we should really expect nothing.
However, as visualAd said it'a quite pleasant to get appreciated but ordinary "Thank you" works for me too.

... and why would someone care much about it anyway? ... [couldn't resist] ...

Actually on the issue of people being lazy, and once they receive their answer not rating helpful posts made by others. Is there some sort of mod for the rep system that could make it almost compulsory? Like a pop-up of some sort? Just putting it out there

    Re: PM to request Rating

That wouldnt be a good idea because that would dilute the value of a Rep'ing. Every single thread would generate reps even if they were worthy or not.

If you post to get reps then it will be frustrating. If you post for the love of the code then reps will find your way one way or another.

    Ps, I love code

    Re: PM to request Rating

Sorry stupid me -.- i should have explained more. I meant a pop-up but it wouldn't automatically rate all posts made. It would give the user the option to rate.

    Re: PM to request Rating

That wouldnt be a good feature to have for several reasons like I previously posted. Also, there would be no way to identify when it should popup or not as a thread has no real end.

Yea i suppose it would have to occur once the thread is resolved. But 85% or so threads are not resolved -.-

Anyway thanks for your thoughts rob.

Perhaps but it wouldnt be a supported Hack. So more then likely it wont be done as we have to reinstall the Resolved Hack each time the Forums are upgraded along with anything else that has been customized.

Good idea though but just too hard to implement/maintain.

    Re: PM to request Rating

Just another view on this matter,

Although I prefer to get rep points for help over nothing, an explicit and nice written thank you is fine by me and sometimes even more appriciated.

The thing with Rep points is.....
You can not 'buy' anything with them (was diffrent on Cadvault. you could aquire nice and ugly visual additions with squirell points)
Rep points tend to display someone's repling frequency and years on this forum instead of the quality of their answers. (I've had rep point on very basic
stuff and thundering silence on realy intensive accurate and complex reply's)

As you can see I've placed a link in my signature to the rating page but my behavior towards anyone will not alter on getting or not getting a rating.
why can't programmers keep and 31 Oct and 25 dec apart. Why Rating is Useful
for every question you ask provide an answer on another thread.

I rep all clever solutions I see, even if they're not helping me specifically. (Though I don't rep something if I don't know for a fact that it will work.)

I don't expect a rep back when I help somebody, but my ego is such that I'm very grateful whenever they do. However, a public thank you is pretty much just as good in my book.

Re: [RESOLVED] PM to request Rating

Actually i have another great! idea

Is there a way to make the rate button kind of like the way it is on MSDN forums. But with the same rules unlike on their forums. You still have to spread rep about and you gain power with amounts of posts etc....

My theory is that some people miss the rate link where it is currently and maybe if it were up near where it says Re: [RESOLVED] PM to request Rating it would be easier to find.

Re: [RESOLVED] PM to request Rating

Well moving the Rate link anywhere else will require a template edit which means re-editing the template each and everytime we have an upgrade. Its realy only worth performing a Hack if the return is substancial.

So almost anything would involve some sort of editing to the template? Is there any plugin/addin that could do the job? That you would just have to install.

Re: [RESOLVED] PM to request Rating

Most plugins incorporate some kind of install (xml file and other supporting files) but also are dependant upon either editing at least one template or adding code to at least one template.

Then you have to deal with the addin not being supported or not and if the plugin will still be functional after an upgrade etc.

As you can see it can become a headache after just one Hack.
