I have no idea which forum to put this in. I just wanted to start a discussion about image types for use on the web. Personally I feel we should be thinking about flushing out GIFs in favour of non-proprietary formats like PNG. Anyone got anything interesting to add?

i am not familiar with that format.
However as long as compuserve isn't charging a licensing fee for each .gif i make, then i am not concerned about it.

I think PNG is far superior to GIF, as well as being royalty-free

Is it acceptible to use it to the exclusion of the other two? Is it well supported by browsers?

JPG - Good for photos
GIF - Good for cartoons
PNG - Good for text
those are the results I've got
and PNG is supported by IE,NS and Opera

Gifs aren't that bad... They are small which is good and they make some funny little animations which are sometimes pleasant (They make some peoples Avatars!).
Though I do agree that they are a bugger to use in any other way and the quality is crap!

I'm not complaining about their quality, or the usefulness of their application, more the money-grabbing attitude of the companies with proprietary formats. I suppose its sensible business practices, but it stalls technological growth. We should be using PNGs instead by now.

But the problem with PNG's are their size they are much bigger... We should all be using Flash and saving them that way.. Then they are much smaller!

I wasn't saying that it was too big.. I was just saying that it is a bit bigger than the other files and that could cause problems when lack of space is an issue.
