Dreaming to be a programmer

I am dreaming to be a programmer someday .... but i have a problem just like the others and that are about "Logical thinking and Mathematical Thinking". I decided to start on Visual Basic and then go to C#. But could anyone give me a good tips, hints, objectives how to improve my logical and mathematical thinking. Other said if your not good in math drive it in logic. But what if i dont have that 2 characteristics ?. So please give me a good advice.

1. Coz i want to program, program, program, coding and coding.
2. Bcoz when i watching some movies and i've seen some of them like hackers cool electronic made of programs.
3. i want to program anything that i want.

But the problem with me is like i said the "logical and mathematical thinking" and when im studying those parameters,classes, methods. i dont know what is it ?? and lets say im done with the basics i dont know what should i study next

1. Coding isn't something that can easily be learned if you don't have the aptitude for it. It requires logical thinking and planning.. .that is, if you actually want to accomplish something. "Hello world!" apps aren't always considered feats of programming.

2. Movies are just for entertainment. Very very very rarely does the content of a movie actually become reality. Hackers in real life are usually too smart to do what you see in the movies, which is pure Hollywood style.
3. That's pretty broad.. I'd love to program a couple of nice-sized games.. but I'm well aware that I lack the needed knowledge to do so.

Parameters? Think of them as descriptions of an object or class. Method? Something that object or class can do. Class? Something that contains parameters and/or methods.

If you're serious, (in which case you REALLY chose the wrong sub forum ) the the only answer is: do lots of logical/mathmatical stuff. Buy a rubix cube and a puzzle book. The brains a muscle, train it.

I don't think I've solved a Rubiks cube in my life... but I did drop college calculus because it was pitifully easy...

can easily develop my logical and mathematical thinking .... timeshifter about hackers that why i decided to be a programmer bcoz of them they influnce me what is the world of programming .... we can manipulate a lots of things in programming .... but as i have said im very poor when it comes in logic and math ... i study about vb.net but im stack with basic .... i cant move on into another level of programming .... coz i cant master the basic ... like arrays,recursion,iteration and others . bcoz it needs a logically and mathematically thinking ....

Like many people here have said - programming isn't as glamarous as media makes it. You'll often be placed on projects that are outside your skill set by people who don't know the difference between RAM and ROM - leaving you to fend for yourself and adapt. You'll run into many hurdles and last minute "tweaks" from management that will have you camping in your cube overnight.

The only benefit is, it pays well and through all of the pain and misery... It is one of the most gratifying careers out there (like birthing babys or saving animals - but more selfish). First time you get stuck on something for days and days and have that *snap* moment, you'll know what I mean.

Don't take any form of criticism - ever. Instead, deal it. If you can make everyone around you feel completely inadequate; no one will ever question you. This kind of power is key in the IT industry.

It sounds like you have a long and tough road ahead. I don't know that programmers can be made, they simply are. You either have it or you don't. Because you want to code isn't enough (in my opin). As others have noted, more often than not, it's not a lot of fun. Take how my day has gone so far (in less than 2 hours)..... I've managed to write but jsut a couple of queries, fight with my project-mate, do a couple of tests (please note, I have NOT coded anything) and found the biggest timebomb in our project (release date on Monday next week and it still has to get through test) and break the bad news to the project manager. It's now 10am .... I haven't finish my second cup of coffee and I haven't coded anything. It's not pretty or glamorous. It is quite literally in the trenches development.

I'm fortunate enough to work in a decent sized organization, with a group of some truly wonderfully talented people that I wouldn't trade for anything, and it helps that the org chart here is extremely flat and shallow (me -> my sup -> company prez)... most places arent' like that.

An idea... see if there is a local mentoring program. See if they have any participants that are in the development world. If so, see if you can shadow them for a day or two... get a feel for what it's really like.

Hi pytagoras,

Don't start on programming with the intent to do hacking. I do programming for 10 years, and I still don't know how to hack into anything (but I never actually tried, and I never wanted to).

In a movie, they make it look extremely easy, and very colorful also, when in fact is exactly the opposite.

And when I said I did programming for 10 years, I don't think you got the idea on what that actually means.
What it means is: Programming for at least 3-4 hours per day after school, and most of the weekend, from the time I wake up, to the time I go to sleep. I did that for about 3-4 years while in school, then I started to do less and less programming as I got my full time job. Now I do programming at work mostly, and rarely at home.

In this time I made a program every day (or every few days), I have a backup of at least 1000 programs, but NONE of them are 100% finished !
I never got to finish a program because I had so many ideas. While I was working on one program, I already had ideas to make 2 or more other programs, so most of the time, I gave up on current program, and started on my new ideas.
Now I rarely have new ideas, even when I do have a new idea, I never have the time to even start programming on it.
Also, the more programming you know, your ideas are bigger, therefore requiring more time to make it reality.

Anyways...
If you start programming, you should start with small things, like screen saver, some kind of data entry program, start learning databases (very important if you want to find a job in programming).

PS.
Math is not that important (unless you want to make games), logic is more important for programming, regardless of what kind of programming you want to get into.

You don't need calculus to program.
You don't need Trig to understand arrays,
You don't need to be a Vulcan to do a For...Next, If...Then,

99% of programming requires basic math, */+-, and simple cause and effect.

Arrays are, as previously indicated somewhere, Structures, N Dimensional Boxes where you put a single thing, less related to math and more closely related to filing cabinits or compartmentalized Desk Drawers.

Math hasn't been absolutely necessary since Fortran. Logic is your way to go and puzzles are nice. I play with my rubiks cube alot, do sudoku (buy the advanced books and don't guess or take notes. Prove every number and you'll get really good then), and when someone else is around - I play Pentago with them. That's another fun game that forces you to be really aware of ever changing enviroments.

Look up Discrete Math, and buy a text-book for it.
