good windows server webhost?
My webhost (discountasp.net) has been under DDOS attack for the past 4-5 days...
I have lost access to email/website/sql server. It comes back up from time to time, but is down most of the time. They can't seem to do anything to prevent it from happening. I know a good DDOS attack is basically impossible to stop from happening short of blocking all traffic to the servers which doesn't do anyone any good.
So I guess my webhost has pissed off the wrong people, because this attack is not letting up.
So I need to switch hosts to someone less hated. Anyone have a good hosting suggestion?
I need to run on a windows server box, and have access to SQL Server, and I need PayFlowPro which is the payment system we use. We need to be able to connect remotly to the SQL Server (aka through the management console), unlike somehosts that restrict access to websites and their interfaces only..

Re: good windows server webhost?
IIS6 and IIS7 are pretty solid, secure, stable servers.
I don't see any benefit from using apache...

Re: good windows server webhost?
In my experience Apache does what its told and you never have to think about it ever again.
You can expand it without disturbing anything else and the support is excellent.
If I say anything against IIS the it will just look like another rant. So, IIS works for some people a lot of the time.

Re: good windows server webhost?
I have heard of such things, but is it really truly supported 100%? or is it a collection of hacks and mono?

But good luck finding a host that runs Windows, Apache, and ASP.NET in tandem, let alone your other requirements.

Re: good windows server webhost?
I don't want apache, I am perfectly happy with Windows hosting and IIS webserver.
However I am always interested in whatelse is out there, even if I have no plans on changing anything.

Re: good windows server webhost?
You sound interested if it means you don't have to go out of your way to get it, even if it is free.

Re: good windows server webhost?
well its not going to be free, as we don't have the means for internal hosting here. So regardless of what is free and not free in terms of operating system, we are still going to be paying a 3rd party host.
If we had redundant internet connections coming in here (cable and fios) then I would be more than happy to host a server inside.

If this is really the first time you've had problems with DiscountASP.NET, why not just stick with Discountasp.net?
This DDOS will blow over (it appears it already has).
If you had past complaints then I understand.
But I've had service with them for over 2 years and have never had a reason to complain.

Re: good windows server webhost?
Well the original post was made when it was still in the middle of the outtage.
Yes it has been ok now, and we may stay with them for the time being. This is their second major DDOS attack. The first was in 2005. They made such a big stink about putting all these safeguards inplace after the 2005 attack, which is why I am a bit annoyed that it happened again.
For the most part they are a great host. They offer a lot of customization you won't find with shared hosting solutions.
Probably my biggest gripe (other than the outtage) is their lack of a phone number. I never need "support" but sometimes (like when their site is down too) it is nice to have a number to call to see what is going on with your site.
