xbox 360 vs ps3 (serious)
Right now I'm looking at an xbox 360 elite because it's cheaper and supposedly better. Is it better and where can I find some good prices?

PS3 has more raw horsepower and a higher max res than the 360. Right now it's behind in games because programmers are having a more difficult time with the Bluray format and with the Cell Proc idea. Once that hurdle is overcome, I fully believe that the PS3 is going to be without question the better system.

I think the 360 is more for people who like sports and racing games - as there isn't much else that comes out for the console. PS2 had a wide range of games and I think PS3 eventually will too. Before deciding to buy either, you should thoroughly think about if you really need either at all. Do you have a really nice hd tv that really does support 1080i/p? Or is it actually something like 768 vertical lines and just scales 1080 to 768. Even with an HD tv, its hard to make out details such as small text and distant objects in games. PC games usually don't have this problem, so long as the game has a long draw distance.

Microsoft just released a c compiler that creates code for pcs and xbox 360 at same time. And there is something you can sign up for in xbox live so you can download code you made to the xbox 360 to try it out.

That is the XNA framework. Its like an extension to the .net framework. It allows you to develop for the 360 and windows, however you can't target both with one project. You do need to make 2 projects and most likely will have to implement some (minor) code changes. To develop for the 360, you have to pay 100 dollars a year for some reason. You can only distribute your games to other people who are paying the 100 dollars a year.

I don't have an awesome hd tv and I don't really need a 360, but I want it! Is there any way to hook these things up to a computer monitor?
I think the 360 is more for people who like sports and racing games
I only play sports games.

Re: xbox 360 vs ps3 (serious)
another thing to consider: ps3 plays blue-ray movies.
They probably make an adapter cable for anything. If it has an ati chipset it would almost have to support pc monitors. There is a VGA hi-def cable available that connects it to either monitor or hdtv. I don't think it comes with one. And do you have two monitors? If not you will need an input selector for your monitor.

Re: xbox 360 vs ps3 (serious)
A lot of monitors nowadays are coming with DVI and HDMI input ports, which is what the PS3 and 360 would be using, so my guess says Yes, you could run the system through a good monitor.

Yes monitors with hdmi or dvi should be able to work with ps3 and xbox 360 elite. Some computer monitors even have component cable ports too. You can also buy a VGA cable for the 360 which lets you play on a computer monitor.

Thanks, guys! This helps a lot. I have a samsung 204b monitor which looks like I can make the connection. I'll probably order online, so whenever I get the thing I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks.

you are going to need an hdmi to dvi cable. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...e=1775%3A23169
Do NOT buy one of these from a regular retail store. You won't be able to find one for under 100 dollars.

Re: xbox 360 vs ps3 (serious)
The premium and core models are capable of using component cables, composite cables, and vga. The elite model supports all of those along with hdmi. I don't know what the hdmi interface looks like, so I'm not sure if you'd need a female hdmi to male dvi or male hdmi to male dvi.

Play the PS3 on a proper HDTV (like mine) and believe me it is clearly possible to make out those details in the distance.

Yea, but its frankly quite delicious to 'develop' your own games. I made a counting game for my 3 year old. You just download XNA Game Studio Express (which is free), make the game on your PC. If you want to play it on an XBOX - you do have to pay 100 a year which is basically the small-man's licensing fee.
But it's a very easy to use game studio and has great starter games:

I doubt it. From what I've heard, production costs for PS3 games are just too high, many developers refuse to develope for it, especially after the dissapointing sales numbers.
Put that together with the lack of comprehensive online gaming support, it's way behind XBOX 360.
The machine itself is pretty good, if it
1) Had more developer tools to reduce programming costs for game makers.
2) Had a comprehensive online service like XBOX-LIVE
3) Made Blu-Ray a seperate attachment, thus reducing the cost of the PS3 by 200 dollars.
Otherwise, PS3 is dead in the water.

The 360 elite's are selling out like crazy. I can't find a store with these babys in stock for $480. I want to go with circuit city since you get a free controller with it, but all the stores within 100 miles have sold out!! Looks like I won't be getting one anytime soon.

that's funny. As soon as ibm helped develop the cell processor, it sold off its desktop market and started putting cell processors in its servers. A sign of the times?

Why create this thread if you made your mind up before even starting it?

I think that is one of it's positives though/ For the same if not less than the cost of a Blu-ray on the market currently you are in effect getting a games console free. If you look at it that way it makes the PS3 cheap.
It's only when you compare it to the others it looks expensive, HD-DVD should have been incorperated straight into 360, I see it not being as detrimental to both XBox and the HD format as a whole.

Sales figures disagree, XBOX is doing better by seperating the HD.
People don't like to be forced to buy something they're not sure they need, especially when the format wars are still not settled. Plus people have the expectation that eventually HD DVD or Blu Ray (whoever wins) will come down to 100 dollars a player like DVD players did.

Re: xbox 360 vs ps3 (serious)
The issue with the "format wars" is that this next generation is going to decide the winner. If you need to pay an extra <insert figure here, as I don't know> for the HD-DVD add-on, as opposed to having the Bluray player built in to the system... makes for fewer purchases, which means less packages, which may appeal to people.
I dunno, just my take on that.
