    I am getting back into programming again, so I thought I would check out this place for my SIMPLE programming questions. I did a search and found that i CAN'T search the forums. How dumb is that? Now I will have to flood the board with a question that has already been asked and answered MANY times before. Whay did they disable searching???

    Thumbs down

    I agree, this really removes a very valuable resource. It may have something to do with the server capacity, not sure.

    I'm going to post a message to the administrator. Probably won't be the first.

    I acouple of other notes:

    Firstly, if the admin is trying to lesses strain on the server, why doesnt he/she disable the more useless "email when replied to" option?

    Secondly, by disabling the search feature, users will just post the question again, which cuases more and more of the SAME question to be filling up the servers HD. God, I think its time to move on to www.planetsourcecode.com permanatly. Just my 2 cents!

    lol999,

    Thank you for your constructive criticism, helpful suggestions, based on your obvious copious knowledge about the software and the server.

    Now when I turned the search off, I realised that it was removing a huge resource that everyone likes and needs. However, I felt that it was more important to have some forums at all, because when the search is turned on, it takes the server the best part of 5 minutes before it comes spiralling down and crashes. At the moment, at least you have the option to post questions still. We have/are/will look for ways to improve the performance of the server and the software, but until then, I am afraid that we are a little stuck. There is nothing else that we can turn off that will satisfactorily that will ease the load, because it is such a large burden on the server.

    I am doing my best to alleviate the situation, but there's only a certain number of hours in the day.

    All the best,
    John

    Angry Every thought about it?

    To Admin;

    Hi, Although have you ever thought about that people would ask the same questions again and again instead of looking at the old responses? With out the search cabability forum is almost worthless. In my opinion adding a new server just for search cababilities is pretty realistic and works and I don't think cost of servers would be that much though.

    Anyhow Search was the most important feature in these forums.

    No, that wouldn't work, you would have to copy the database over to the search server everytime anything is posted. If not, the 'search' server will still have to access the DB on the forums server, which is were the strain is. There is one possible solution, to add an entry to the 'search' server everytime something is posted, but this would probably be too complicated. Besides, I don't think John is going to purchase a new server just so you guys can have your search feature.

    Sorry if I made a few mistakes, but I'm a little right now....
