Resolved [RESOLVED] Good hosting company

I know this is not a vb question. I need some unbiased opinions on web hosts
ratings. I have had a good host for about the last 4-5yrs and lately they have become unreliable, downtime, email support, phone support etc
Feedback welcome good or bad

Thank you for your reply. I guess i should have mentioned i need server side includes, asp, vbscript, frontpage extensions.
I just recieved an email from my current host saying:
You are on a win 2000 server and they want to move me to a win 2003 server,
which is more reliable and still supported by gates.

I was hoping to get more feedback before i marked as resolved.
I tried a bunch of free ones a few years ago and they did not have the features or reliablility i needed. I will check the one you recommended.

Avoid Tulip Hosting, poor customer service and poor uptime. I tried to run two e-commerce sites there last year and I had considerable problems with uptime, dropped emails and folder security mysteriously changing. I eventually gave up on the idea shut the sites down and sold off my inventory on eBay and local flea markets.

I'm using Tripod right now for my personal site. The support and uptime are good, only one serious glitch in about 5 years. They're OK for a personal site or a business web presence site but I wouldn't recommend them for anything huge like a big e-commerce operation. They're Apache based so if you want ASP/ASP.NET features they can't do it.

I used Brinkster a while back. They were good until they had some growing or dotcom bomb pains in 2002. That's when I switched to Tripod. They seem better now and they would be on my short list if I were to do a ASP.NET site.

I'll put in another vote for GoDaddy. and they do offer MS - ASP, VBS, FP, etc., as well as Linux/MySQL/PHP.
The most difficult part of developing a program is understanding the problem.
The second most difficult part is deciding how you're going to solve the problem.
Actually writing the program (translating your solution into some computer language) is the easiest part.

Please indent your code and use tags around it to make it easier to read.

I like your research method. Very scientific and unbiased.

I've not heard anything bad about GoDaddy.

Goddady for me has not been perfect. The support has been good. However, they do not give me full control of the permissions to my folders like I need. Currently my forum (ASP playground) needs some adjustment to the permissions and I can't figure out how to do it. Goddady said can't support me....Plus they don't allow full connection to the MSSQL db. I have not got into that part it yet. So I am not sure how the control panel access works.

1and1.com - offers Linux and Win options (incl FP extensions) My primary web is with them on a linux server... never once had a problem in 5 years.
jodohost.com - offers same - again no problems.

Thanks people
Since my original post i signed up and canceled at 2 different hosts, after uploading my site: DiscountASP.NET & hostdepartment.com.
Can't remember the problem with hostdepartment, but DiscountASP.net
does not keep a copy of forwarded messages, a feature I really needed.
The host i had to begin with suddenly got their act together.

I recently started several sites on their Linux hosting and I haven't ran into any major problems. I haven't bought a Windows hosting plan yet but I may do that soon.

A common complaint about GoDaddy is that their interface is very ad heavy. At every turn they're trying to sell you this or that. This can make it a pain to navigate their custom control panel and to find exactly what you want to do. I find this aspect of their hosting annoying but the price, features and service is very good so it's kind of a trade-off.

Another reason why some people don't like them is that the owner, Bob Parsons, is rather politically conservative and occasionally outspoken about it. This doesn't have anything to do with their ability to host web sites but given today's political climate it does affect some people's attitudes toward the company.

Lastly, they don't get much love from the black/gray hat seo/spammer/etc community because they'll usually shut down questionable operations quickly. This might be viewed as a good thing if you don't want to be sharing a server address with a scumware provider or serial spammer.
