I have been developing software for many years now and I would now like to try my hand at developing web pages.
I have FrontPage Express and MS Visual InterDev software available but I don't really know where to start.
Can anyone suggest any good web sites which offer a fairly painless, step by step intoduction to this massive topic?
Thanks in advance.

Drop FrontPage Express. It may seem easy and innocent at first, but you don't know what you're getting yourself into. Use VS.NET's text editor instead and code HTML by hand, if you're serious about web apps.

Agreed.
Firstly learn HTML and possibly CSS properly, it is not very difficult. W3Schools has some brilliant tutorial. Once you are profficient in HTML & CSS you could use Editor like FrontPage/DreamWeaver for designing Complex layout.
I mostly hand code my HTML only use editor if i have complex layout made up of embeded tables.

There is a great war coming. Are you sure you are on the right side? Atleast I have chosen a side.
