VB2K5- 2K5 and XP Home- Compatible?
I watched the videos online at Microsoft (on using VB 2K5) and receiving the free (well S&H isn't, but the rest is I believe) version of Visual Studio 2K5, and I wondered if this version will work with XP Home SP2. That is the version I use, and I would hate to be stuck with a version I can't use.
Any issues or problems with the Home version of XP? Or any other issues I might run into?

Re: VB2K5- 2K5 and XP Home- Compatible?
There should not be any problems, because for one VB2K5 express came out in 2005, hence the name, and vista came out in 2006/2007 (depending on which version), and XP sp2 is the 2nd newest OS from Microsoft. Also, http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/ex...e/default.aspx That is the link to the system requirements..it says XP Home SP2 is supported under the operating systems list.
Operating System
Visual Studio Express can be installed on any of the following systems:
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional SP4
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Server SP4
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Advanced Server SP4
Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Datacenter Server SP4
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional x64 Edition (WOW)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional SP2
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition SP2
Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2002 SP2

Microsoft® Windows Server ™ 2003 R2, Datacenter Edition
Microsoft® Windows Server ™ 2003 R2, Datacenter x64 Edition (WOW)
Microsoft® Windows Vista ™
Hope I helped!
EDIT: Visual Basic 2005's free version is called Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition to clear things up. If you want to download the .ISO and burn it for future use, you can easily do that, instead of using the horrible download manager Microsoft uses to download the express edition. If you want the ISO and burning instructions ask me, and I'll link you.

Not 100% sure but you should check it out if you are doing web development, the Visual Web Developer (Express) may not run on XP Home as IIS is not supported on Home.

Isn't it true that MS has provided Visual Web Developer with a virtual server that makes it unnecessary to have IIS? So, in theory it should be compatible with all versions of XP, Home included. Am I missing something?
Since I discovered Delphi and Lazarus, VB has become history to me.

Re: VB2K5- 2K5 and XP Home- Compatible?
Possibly, as I did mention I wasnt sure and he should check it out himself. I cant install VWD and risk messing up my VS install etc. If you dont use VWD then you cant run web on XP Home.

Re: VB2K5- 2K5 and XP Home- Compatible?
I just wondered, because I am going to get the Visual Studio Express one thru the mail from Microsoft, and I hadn't thought about using the Visual Web Dev Express, but I will shelve that information for future reference.
I will post more about it after I get it if that is ok? I was hoping I could have found one person that has XP Home SP 2 that could give feedback on how it worked for them.
Dang.

Re: VB2K5- 2K5 and XP Home- Compatible?
Allot of members are running XP SP-2 still and using VB Express on it. As shown on the ms site, VB Express is supported on XP so you shouldnt have to worry about it.
@esposito, yes, I verified that a virtual local web host is provided with VWD so no IIS is required.

That is true, but I suspect that very few of them are running XP Home....most folks with a need/desire to run Visual Studio would also upgrade to XP Pro.

I know it is supported, however, I would be willing to bet that very, very few people are using Visual Studio Express on it.

Re: VB2K5- 2K5 and XP Home- Compatible?
Well there is no reason to upgrade to Pro as we found out VWD doesnt need IIS so Pro is not needed. So, yes you can continue using it on your XP Home

Thanks for confirming what I had read somewhere some time ago. The virtual local web server is missing in VS 2003 and was only introduced with v. 2005.
So, while ASP.NET from VS 2003 cannot run on XP Home, the 2005 version can.
Since I discovered Delphi and Lazarus, VB has become history to me.

Yup, you got it. Thanks to for making me look it up lol.
Always a good thing to learn somethng new everyday.
The only drawback to Express products is that they only can do so much. If you are needing to write medium to enterprize size apps then the Pro or higher version of VS would be best.
