Resolved [RESOLVED] Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

    Hey guys!
So yeah I thought Id try installing Fedora Core 6 on one of my partitions.
Im just wondering a couple o things.

    1. Can Linux only run applications specifically made for linux? How would I go about if I wanted to play let say.. some Counter-Strike?
    2. Developing with Visual Basic .Net on Fedora Core 6, is it possible? I read something about "mono" here in some thread..
    3. I need help here, which one should I download?

Any answers will make me really thankful

    1. Yes. You can use wine to run some Windows apps. Not all.
    2. Yes, but the mono VB compiler is in development. I recommend C#.
    3. Zod-dvd-i386 for 32-bit x86; Zod-dvd-x86_64 for 64-bit.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

    1. Oh, but where do I find all the Linux apps then? Ive never seen any.
    2. Ive always wanted to learn C#, so theres a fully working mono C# compiler?
    3. Thanks, I think I'll go for 64 bit.

And thanks for the fast reply

    1. Most open-source software comes in both Windows and Linux flavours. You can usually download these and compile them, or they might offer binaries as well. Many popular programs are also available for download from the repositories for your selected distribution.
    2. Yes. It supports at least .NET 1.1, and I think 2.0 as well (perhaps with some tweaking).

    Ah ok thanks.
I feel that using Fedora will be more a pain than a pleasure for me, but I have to try before I judge eh.
    Just saw this:

Doesnt this mean that Wine cant be used on a 64 bit Fedora?

No; 64-bit architectures can still be x86-based. However, it doesn't support 64-bit Windows applications. See:

They're shell commands. If you don't understand what all the terminology means, just bust out a terminal session and run the commands.

Any answers will make me really thankful

    • mono supports .Net 2.0 VB and C# .Complete support will be added by version 2(1.2 at the moment)
    • Wine supports Limewire and utorrent.Start with a 32 bit OS .If everything works fine ,go with the 64 bit.
    • This site should help you in choosing your alternatives.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

oh thanks for that link wiki.
Im completely lost on how to install Fedora...I downloaded the ISO, burned it as a "Bootable Data disc" in Nero, and tried to boot with it, but no luck. It wouldnt boot.
Could somebody please give me a step by step guide? This shouldnt really be this hard...

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

I think you burned the ISO as a file on a data disc. You need to open it in Nero/application of choice and burn it. It shouldn't give you any options.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

Nero has an option -->Burn image to disc, simply click that ,select the iso and the rest is usual.
Set your BIOS settings to boot from CD
Wait for the bluish fedora welcome screen
Press Enter, skip the media check .
Wait for the anaconda to load and rest should be pretty simple.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

What i did was; I mounted the ISO file in Daemon Tools and dragged all of the contents over to Nero, so it shouldve created a exact copy of the iso file.

Ive only got one DVD left If I try again it must work..or else I will have to wait until tomorrow to get new ones

edit: yeah I was in BIOS and set the boot order to:
    1. dvd/cd
    2. Samsung hdd
    3. nvidia boot agent blah blah (something like that )

But all I got was DOS

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

That's not how you burn an ISO. Never extract it, just open it directly in Nero. Otherwise, you lose all of the format settings that the ISO image defines.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

Ok thanks guys, it works. Just that the disc i used to burn with wasnt in a really good shape, so the disc test on the beginning of the setup failed each time. Anyways, thats a small problem, just need to burn yet another disc, thanks for all the help

Listen, Don't even think about installing any new linux applications until you've got used to just moving around in the Linux desktop environment. A default desktop install of Fedora gives you enough tools to achieve anything that you can do with a well-equipped windows installation. And then a whole lot more on top of that.

Its quite easy to get a lot of stuff done without even opening any console sessions at all. If you dive into bash (Bourne Again SHell) commands too soon then you'll only get frustrated because its nothing like DOS and then you'll miss so much of the good stuff.

Windows taught you to walk and now you got to run, just take it one step at a time.

There were plenty of times when I was starting out with Linux that I got angry but its just a matter of knowing where to find help files and online help.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

    This is getting embarrasing.
Ive now formatted my Vista drive to install Fedora on it. I tried every single option on the Fedora install screen:

But I always end up with these errors:

    and

I have one partition thats newly formatted (20 gig) so space shouldnt be a problem?
I dont see the problem at all.

I remember selecting the last option in the combo and going advanced storage configuration...
For the rest I'll have to check in tomorrow.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

Got it now, thanks anyways .Though the installation always hangs on the part where you select features to install (webserver etc). Im really frusturated right now...There is nothing for me to do, Ive tried not selecting any of them, but it still hangs. (At least I think it hangs, the "working cursor" animation keeps on moving, but the progressbar just stops moving at the same point every time. I think ive waited like...10 minutes at most.)

Ive checked the disc and its okay.

EDIT: by the way, this is the 64 bit version of Fedora, perhaps I'll try my luck with the 32 bit version instead.

Leave it an hour, 10 minutes is not long enough. There are thousands of packages it needs to check.

Re: Linux noob thinking of getting Fedora Core 6

You need to define a partition for the root path (/) and a swap partition(700 MB to 1 GB) which I think you have managed to do.

After that you can simply uncheck the server, office and ... and software development options. It should then show you that the partitions are being formatted and so on .

My installation crashed for the first time but went smooth for the second time.Perhaps you can try the 32 bit but I don't think you should give up so soon.

Give the text install a try, in the past I've had graphical installer crashes with Fedora Core that didn't occur using text install (still quite convenient).
