    Vs 2005

Does anyone else find it amusing that MS are still advertising VS 2005 as if its a new product?

    No? Oh.

Everybody finds it amusing that you believe a command-line based OS to be at the forefront of modern technology, whereas actually the only good thing about it is that it is free.
    I use VB 6, VB.Net 2003 and Office 2010

    Code:
Excel Graphing | Excel Timer | Excel Tips and Tricks | Add controls in Office | Data tables in Excel | Gaussian random number distribution (VB6/VBA,VB.Net) | Coordinates, Vectors and 3D volumes

Security is a main thing. I've not seen the Windows Firewall nearly as configurable and powerful as iptables and ipchains.

Also, compare Windows batch files and Bash shell scripts? That's right, there is no comparison.

The OS being command line based only bothers people who don't know how to use it. Everyone else loves it.

I find it amusing that woss spends his time on a forum dedicated to Microsoft technologies, bashing Microsoft back and forth, touting linux, and the like..

He bashes anything and everything that MS does....

Just seems a bit odd to me. Woss if I were you I would be spending my time on linux forums and such, do you really just love to bash MS so much that it keeps you hanging around here?

I used to code .NET and I still, quite begrudgingly, use Windows at work. That's why I'm here even though I use and develop on Linux at home.

What ever came of the Monad shell? I remember playing with a beta of it a couple of years back.

It morphed into Windows PowerShell, was briefly touted as a feature of Vista, briefly disappeared, and can now be found here.

So, you do admit, do you not Mr. Wossname, that there are things at which Windows is far superior to Linux! And, if that is the case, who is to say that there are not even more of those things?

    > Kleinma...

Well its simply because I'm a professional, long-term user of Microsoft technologies that I have the right to bash MS so hard.

Unlike so many people who bash Linux (pun intended) but have not used it even once in their lives.

I certainly don't come here to learn things. Few ChitChatters do.

Also, I do hang around Linux forums, but as we all know forums are still slower than researching things yourself.

    Re: Vs 2005

Oh but it is provoked. Many people are forced to use it at some point in their day be it through work or whatever. I have to sit at a windows box all day, coding ways to get around the numerous strangulating limitations on windows. There is simply so much less stress with Linux, I just wish people could see that.

Everyone has to be passionate about something right?

    Re: Vs 2005

well it is easy to bash microsoft because lets face it.. they are a big target..

The things I don't understand is the manner in which people like to bash them.

I see things all the time like "Linux is better because of this" (substitute Linux for Mac as well)

Then MS might have an app, a fix, a service pack, a new OS or whatever that introduces functionality that linux or mac has, and the people who were claiming windows was lacking, now just accuse it of plagarism for putting in what they said was missing???

Well lets face it, plagarism is good to a degree when it comes to computer software. Certainly on the GUI side of things.

If everyone was making their own GUIs for every app they wrote, not only would dev time be a ton longer, but there would be no uniformity at all between programs you use.

If Linux or Mac had the user base of Windows, then it would be very interesting to see how it really stands up with that many PCs running it.
This simply is not the case though, so its really hard to make any assumptions.

as for linux and mac being a more secure OS, this again falls to assumption.

Viruses of today are not like the ones that used to get slipped on floppy disks back in the day. Viruses (and spyware) generally serve 2 purposes.

    1) Steal information from you
    2) Present you unwanted information (ads)

So if linux or Mac was able to gain a market share worth attacking, you better believe virus writers would turn their efforts over to where the money can be made. The fact that Linux is open source could make it easier, as with Windows at least they have to prod and poke to find new exploits. With Open Source a good hacker/virus writer is given blue prints to lay out their attack.

After saying all that, I also want to mention that I think Linux and Mac are both good operating systems. I just don't think Windows is a bad one.

Even in this unlikely event, the 'virus' would be stamped out overnight, whereas MS would probably not even acknowledge the problem for a long time.

It is in the nature of Open Source software to be rapidly updated.

    Re: Vs 2005

I didn't say "highly". I mean the fact that Linux is much less friendly to virus writers due to its integral organisation.

[very subtle hint]Hey guys, this is the kind of discussion that would be perfect for a Linux forum [/vsh] http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=460198

JM already owns plenty of sites that are geared towards linux.

Having one on a VB programming forum would be borderline silly don't you think??

I'm not suggesting a large-scale Linux department for VBF, just a single forum where we can discuss general linux stuff (see the thread in Forum Feedback: http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?t=460198). That way we'd keep Linux topics out of CC and have them in a proper forum where they can be discussed properly.

It would also get a bunch of Linux users onto VBF that don't already come here.

I doubt that linux users would flock to a Visual Basic forum site because it had a linux forum somewhere way down on the forum listing...

Even if they did, its so off base from what this forum is meant for.

Also they would likely just sit around and talk about how much they hate Windows and Microsoft like you do

    Thank you.

There's virtually no limit to the thing's I'm prepared to waste time on. All I ask is that we give this Linux forum a try. Call it a month's trial and then if its no good then drop it.

I'll never say another word about Linux in CC again. (unless I get drunk and forget)

    Re: Vs 2005

Well your suggestion is already out there, and you know the people who are in charge of making that decision (and its not me).

Actually though, I have no problem with linux being talked about in CC, hell, I even try to use linux once in a while (when I can get it to work).

It just seems whenever you mention linux, you seem to have a nack for also bashing Microsoft and Windows in the process

    Re: Vs 2005

I have Suse, Fedora 6, Slax, and ubuntu distros.

Some of my headaches are with Virtual Machines.

Of course some of my headaches are from lack of linux knowledge.

Others are just because the fact that so many people make distros, its worse than having windows 95 through vista to worry about...

However I did try to get fedora running on real hardware, but it just would just give me a cursor I could move and nothing else. I have also had lots of problems configuring the display correctly.

So, finally rob and company agree that Linux is more than just an Operating System and genuine updates.
