    Re: Linux Forum

The last time this came up, the answer was this:
    http://justlinux.com/forum/

However, I'm all for adding a Linux section on this board, even for just a trial period. I think it would get more traffic than some of the sections we have now.

    Re: Linux Forum

Where on this forum would you put it, and what would you expect to be discussed in the forum (Linux is pretty broad).

    Re: Linux Forum

I'd expect it to go near to (or at least at the same hierarchical level as) General PC.

I think the most sensible focus for it would be the Shell environment, core utilities and so forth. Shell scripting etc... This would be useful for those wanting to administer networks that have Linux boxes attached either as servers or workstations. General linux programming could be discussed as it is such an integral part of linux operations.

I'd volunteer as a mod of course.

I'm sure it would attract some interest from knowledgeable members.

I'd be absolutely interested in a Linux forum. I'm a Linux sysadmin and I'd frequently help out or mod the forum or what have you.

    Re: Linux Forum

I'd like to see a Linux as well, and let me be the first to say RTFM newbie.
Perhaps it could be kept general like the HTML forum and people could put tags in the thread subject:
    [BASH] how to test file
    [SCRIPT] is Ruby any good
[HARDWARE]guess what, my wifi doesn't work.

I would definately welcome a linux forum.
I'm a linux n00b, so a place to ask questions about it would be great.

    Re: Linux Forum

I don't see why. VB.net programs can run under Linux http://www.mono-project.com/Language_BASIC

Why is this new VB compiler important?

This is a milestone step forward in the Mono project. There are a huge number of developers worldwide who write using Visual Basic and this VB compiler makes it possible for those developers to write applications that run on Linux without needing any specific Linux expertise. Also, developers can now do Visual Basic development *in* Linux as opposed to using Linux only as a deployment target.

Or did MS neglect to mention that?
i agree with that point of view, but in that case, we should have a forum for every OS that supports, or will support, .net...

and in my opinion thats out of this forum context...

    Re: Linux Forum

I'll put my vote in for a Linux forum. If there can be a Java forum and a "Testers and Testing" forum, a Linux forum does not seem to be very out of context to me. vbforums.com, with our wide array of topics, isn't so much a Microsoft only website anymore, it's more of a website for all sorts of developers to join in. I think it ought to be below General PC on the index.php page.

To say nothing of PHP, Assembly, C & C++. I agree that it would not be out of context with the forums as they stand today.

It would be really nice to have a Linux section here preferably under the General PC section.

Only 7 members supporting a Linux forum....

Also, I agree that it may be a bit of a reach for being in context with the site.

    Re: Linux Forum

You're probably right; while we're at it we should ditch the PHP forum since JupiterMedia has one of those too. We can kill the General Developer forum in favour of either of JupiterMedia's specialised forums. And then once we've removed the database forum and directed everyone elsewhere we'll be much more efficient!

    Re: Linux Forum

The php and db forums on VBF are higher volume forums and the GD forum could not be replaced by CG or DevX either.

Well with your logic then CC should be deleted too.

Should we add a MAC forum too then?

Well this is Feedback Forum and you did ask for us to "have our say". I had my say as well as others but for some reason mine is being crapped on. So if this is the kind of inappropriate reactions we could expect to get then perhaps it really isnt worth having a Linux forum.

It would be good to see a Linux forum. Especially as most of the other technologies supported on this website have had or have a Linux port.
    PHP || MySql || Apache || Get Firefox || OpenOffice.org || Click || Slap ILMV || 1337 c0d || GotoMyPc For FREE! Part 1, Part 2

    | PHP Session --> Database Handler * Custom Error Handler * Installing PHP * HTML Form Handler * PHP 5 OOP * Using XML * Ajax * Xslt | VB6 Winsock - HTTP POST / GET * Winsock - HTTP File Upload

Latest quote: crptcblade - VB6 executables can't be decompiled, only disassembled. And the disassembled code is even less useful than I am.

    .NET/MONO and LINUX.

It is better to make a section for it here so we can share experiences here and will lessen looking for it somewhere else.

    I vote for it.

Post 22 wasn't intended to be anything other than a way of referencing another thread with a similar topic. I didn't mean anything by it.

What I said in the other thread was:

Well, in the interest of fairness, people still need a place to air their objections to the new forum.

If someone doesn't want it then they should still be able to reply here.
