[RESOLVED] Windows Server 2000 vs. Windows Server 2003
Hi Guys,
Does Windows Server 2000 consume lesser computer resources than Windows Server 2003?

Re: Windows Server 2000 vs. Windows Server 2003
I would take an educated guess that 2000 does use less resources for these assumptions:
If both are running the same services and features there will be additional resources that are required in 2003 because of improvements to the OS.
Usually following MS' track record, each OS version requires more then any of the previous ones.

Thanks Rob for the reply.
My assumption is also the same as yours. Just wanted to check if I am not thinking too crazy.
The reason being is that I am trying to create a "mobile server".
Crazy idea but currently Windows 2003 Server is installed in my laptop so although slow I think it might be possible.
I am also thinking if Windows 2000 Server can remedy the slowness of the laptop.
Can Windows 2000 Server make my computer run a lot more faster?

Re: Windows Server 2000 vs. Windows Server 2003
I couldnt find anything on minimum system requirements for 2000 server, probably too old now. But have you tried optimizing your laptop? Defrag, stopped non essential servies, uninstalled non-essential programs etc.

I did. But that VS .NET 2003 eats too much laptop resources.
Too bad I cannot uninstall it though.
Is there any other way to optimize my laptop? I already did that. Anyway my memory is 256MB and my processor is only 2.6GHz.
I might also downgrade SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 7.0 but I don't know if Reporting Services ever existed in SQL Server 2000.

Re: Windows Server 2000 vs. Windows Server 2003
I wouldnt recommend downgrading any software. You definately need more memory, at least a gig. You may want to check out the possibility of switching to .NET 2005 Express. Also, a clean reformatting of the laptop (save any necessary data and drivers etc) would help to speed it up as installing and uninstalling programs over time does slow a system down from sloppy uninstallers and broken registry links.

Yes. I should save some money for 1 GB of memory. I hope 1 GB memory chip for an IBM G40 is still on sale.
f*in IBM. Might as well save on an HP laptop.
Thanks that's all I need to know.
By the way, one last question. What laptops have 1GB memory initially and a 3 Ghz processor?

Re: Windows Server 2000 vs. Windows Server 2003
Not sure, a quick search should return a bunch of laptops. Now a days having 1 gig rm and a P4 3 ghz processor is more common as higher end laps have even more.
Yes, better option is to get a better laptop for your needs will be too much for what you have even if you were to upgrade the memory. A 2.6 is still very good but it sounds like the memory is a good portion of the price of a new laptp.

Even IBM? I don't know but I'll do a search.
I have seen an HP and a Neo laptop that has 1GB memory and 3GHz processor.
Ok. I'll do a Google for that. Thanks.

Depending on your location you may want to try http://newegg.com They usually have really low prices.
