Re: Who needs Vista??
The thing I find REALLY offensive about Vista is the fact that MS expect people to pay actual real money for it. You spend several hundred quid on a nice whizzy fast PC and then sh*t on it by installing Vista.
Buy an entry level PC and put linux (or xp if you must) on it and you'll have a much more efficient setup for literally half the price.

Re: Who needs Vista??
I still can't seem to acquire the vista version for my virus scanner.
For that and many other reasons I still feel much safer in XP
(although all the security warnings are supposed to make me feel comfortable... which only annoy after a dozen of times...)
Delete it. They just clutter threads anyway.

DOS was great. Making a GUI was Microsoft's first big mistake.

Re: Who needs Vista??
I recently tried Ubuntu, and the biggest problem with Linux is that everything takes about 12 steps to get anything done. I tried to install a Linux version for integrated video on my Intel motherboard, and I spent about a full day trying to get it to work (remember I am not a CS major and this is my first real experience with a Linux based OS). After that, is there really a question why Linux hasn't gone mainstream?
Vista made have it's flaws, but at least it works, and if anything needs changed, it doesn't take a day of searching and posting on a forum to have a chance at getting a solution.
I did get it to work, well, actually, I let it sit a week or so and when I booted it up, it worked, I am not sure why(I booted it several times when working on it). I like it, it is just really hard to use. I want to use my computer to complete tasks, not perform overly complicated system tasks. I don't think Microsoft will ever have a problem unless they start having those issues.
However, I do think that Vista is mostly eye candy.

Re: Who needs Vista??
most of the problems people attribute to vista, are related to 3rd party drivers and software that simply were not ready with vistas release.

You people really don't understand it, do you.
Microsoft Products == Heavenly user experience.
Who cares about memory hogging or device incompatibility.
I want my computer to look futuristic, with 3D desktop stuff and other worthless tricks.
I code C#....

Oh I beg to differ. Driver support is improving rapidly. When I installed Fedora Core 6 on my laptop recently I did not have to configure one single thing or install any driver - that is something I've never been able to say for Windows (which does not even provide ethernet drivers for this laptop). Even if the vendor does not provide Linux drivers for their hardware, you'll often find an open source third party driver that will provide all of the functionality you need.

That's 4 titles to 1. Windows still wins.

Well I think Windows is always going to hold the title for piracy. You can't really pirate free, open source software.

Re: Who needs Vista??
I don't like the Aero theme. I don't like the aero basic theme. I don't like the windows classic theme. I like xp's luna blue theme - But its not in vista. I don't like the new fonts callibri and segoe. I can't stand cleartype and those fonts look terrible without cleartype on. Most of the windows applications use segoe UI for its font.
When I buy vista at my house(Because I need it for DX10), I'll be using window blinds to run luna, i'll be deleting segoe ui so that it CAN'T use that font, and i'll turn cleartype off where ever I see it.

Re: Who needs Vista??
And before someone says that they like something that I hate, let me say this. I don't care! I don't care whatsoever that you like whatever it is. I hate it, and i'm sure that i'm not absolutely alone in hating whatever it is. The fact is that microsoft imposes the new crap on you and offers you little or no customization so that you can remove things you dislike. One thing that I love about linux is that its desktop environments are HEAVILY customizable.
