Try an advanced geek joke, like
"Because there's too much oxygen in it!"
(SiO2)
Si = Silicon
O = Oxygen.
These are chemical elements. You find them on big charts in chemistry laboratories.

Oh I dunno. Things have changed, people have come, people have gone, people have died, but there's still life here. Still interesting characters saying interesting things. Might be less free-wheeling, but there are still some pretty free-wheelin folks around here.

And people have changed. Some unexistent or fun people have in the long run turned into monsters from an other world. (I am not pointing at someone special...well I do really)....

There was John Percival, Parksie, Dennis Wrenn, kovan and a lot of them others.
The most shocking news for me after I returned to the forums after a gap of a couple of years was Parksie's death.
Funny, back when I had first joined, there had been debates on whether to have a separate Chit Chat forum because people had started posting chit chat stuff in either the General VB or in Forum Feedback. And after it had been created, whether its posts should count towards the total post count. Guess some things never change

Re: Why did you leave VBF?
And regarding the ads, I guess when the ownership of the forums transferred from Karl Moore to the JupiterWorld (?) people (read: Brad Jones and co), many members left in protest of the deal, and also in protest of the moderation and advertisements. However it was soon back to business for the other members, ads or no ads.

Re: Why did you leave VBF?
I never really understood why people had a problem with JM, or the (relatively small & easy to scroll past) ad's. Without them the site would have collapsed due to the "weight" of users. Things have still been a bit stretched at times ('server busy' type errors), even with the extra budget they bring.
As to the moderation, I don't see why that's such a biggie - we're very relaxed compared to most large tech forums.

Some people can't accept the changes, some people can shrug them off...
Financial constraints and the threat of shutting down VBF was what forced a takeover, which in my frank opinion, some of the members could not digest. As a result there were many offshoots of VBF, started by or promoted by ex-VBF members.
