i think there should be limit on signature lenght. Peoples signatures are 5 times longer than there posts. It's hard to read the threads. Maybe we should have short signatures for all forms except Chit-Chat, so then people can still have this competion, but we can still read peoples posts in a decent amount of time.

I'm not trying to be a *****, but it's kind of annoying

i consider mine to be a decent length, but some are just outrageous! Don't want to mention any names for fear of gangland-style revenge...

When I first found this forum I was impressed by how serious it was. Unlike other forums, members tended to use their real names as user names.

Now I think there are a lot of members who are just a total waste of space.

What the hell is the point in having a "longest signature" competition?! it is just putting even more strain on the already groaning servers.

The joke was good until it started to get out of hand....

Maybe we shouldn't have our own personal signature...but something like

Name:
Location:
Sex:
Occupation:
Contact:
Personal Quote:

(okay even that's a little long)

i agree, we should have a length on these signatures. also, some members joined 3 years ago and have 0 or 1 posts, they should be deleted from the database too.

If they have been inactive for 9 months, send them an email saying "Your account with us will be deleted if you do not logon in the next 10 days" or something - some people (not me, obviously) probably can find the answers they are looking for using the Search function instead posting all the time. Of course this is only true when the search function is enabled.......

As far as Sig length goes - does not usually bother me at all, but lately there are 1 or 2 that are a little ridiculous. Maybe a 30 line maximum. That is still pretty generous.

hows about this...a Guest forum. A user that only really has one simple question, can go in to that forum, ask the question and then a cookie is dropped into their system telling that they posted once, and which question, so they can respond to the answers, but can't do all that us registered users can, That way, there is less space taken up in the user database with names attached to only one post. What do you think?

Well ...

Seeing that I was invited, I guess I should post.

OK, I accept whatever share of blame and anger is mine, from all of you. I got a little too carried away, but I have shortened my signature to a decent length, although even that is too long.

I shall try to reduce the unnecessary descriptive lines and just keep the goodies like the quotes and the homepage link etc.

I don't think we should have a limit on the size of the signatures, but lately myself and chenko have been stretching this a little too far or a little too long you can say. I think self-discipline is the best policy in such matters.

If any of you think that recently, in the last 6 months or so, the forums have lost any of their seriousness, I think you are wrong. It's only in Chit Chat and Chit Chat is meant to relieve your tensions, for fun and enjoyment. Just take a look at the threads in the other forums and you will realize that the proportion of Chit Chat threads might have increased, but the quality of the other forums has not deteriorated.

gwdash, you are not being a *****, but doing a good job, actually. In our native language we have a saying which says your critic should be your neighbour. That helps keep a check on yourself.

amesjustin, don't be afraid of any mafia-style hits, and since everyone knows whom you are referring to, it doesn't make any difference, too. If anyone tries to victimize you because of this, it would only prove that you were right.

tomcatexodous, I appreciate that you mentioned my name, pointing out the bad guy in this signature contest. And it's my personal request to you and all others to point out anytime if I am doing something wrong.

And finally, I seriously don't think long signatures would put so much strain on the server that the search function would have to be disabled. Of course I may be wrong!

And that doesn't mean we should have abnormally large signatures. But just like the avatars, signatures have become places where you can post something about your identity, which remains persistent, not unlike threads, and everyone can see it, again not unlike threads.

All in all, I am trying to shorten my sig, hope that chenko does the same and hope more than that, that the search is enabled.

And, this post is definitely longer than my sig!

The signatures are dynamic anyway. The server strain can be relieved instantly by shortening it, but that's probably not the real problem. I agree with gwdash and stevecrm - old members who dont use the forums should be deleted. If they desperately need to keep their account, it wont hurt for them to post in chit chat from time to time. At least we know they're still interested.

I think that some are uselessly(a word?) too long, but some are just works of art! Like parksie's sig...Now that's cool!

i agree. i have no problem with signatures of that length at all. there was one awhile back that said: "Do you know me?" and then did a real cool trick on the screen, don't remember who it was though.

Maybe there should be an option to turn off signatures for people who don't like them?

Sig's that are longer than the actual post are completely rediculous. There should definately be a sign char limit, like the post. It slows it all down and for what? A load of old crap about completely irrelevent stuff. I say 5 lines max (and that is being generous).

Come on guys, we don't need your life story on every post.

gwdash - there is (somewhere) but it's the principle!!

I have to say that I think a few lines is ok for a signiature but when it gets to being stupidly long, and you have to scroll down it all. I can see how people could get annoyed! I even think that mine is slightly long!

or you could even put it in a scrool box so that it does not take up as much space But taht might take massive rewriting and wouldn't help with the server strain problem

ha..what a surprise.. you still remember that ?
That was before the forum admins disabled inline
Javascripts. Just a day before they did that I made
a binary encode/decoder that runs from inline script
of the hyperlinks. Doing it was Cool...But Unfortunately
inline javascripts were disabled the next day and all my
12 hour effort was in vain.

ok, another point...

Some signatures are not very long...but are specially colored...

(no offense EP)

these are long in the background...may cause server strain?...Doubt it...juts look a the chit chat section! There is probably tons of un-needed posts there...

Does VB world dump old chit chat posts? it should kill anything with no response for 1 week...

I think Signatures should be limited..
maybe 3 or 4 lines max! (not # of characters...just the number of lines) a sig with lots of information is fine...just no good if its 8 or 9 or more lines!

YES CHENKO...THIS MEANS YOU!!! PLEASE CHANGE YOUR SIGNATURE!

no offense...but when you post a quick response (like a Thank you) you reply is HUGE with your Signature

but as far as server strain..there must be a better way to reduce it...than to tell people to limit the signature.

I also use my real name...(well ok fine...the _xrx is not on my drivers license)
JPnyc rocks!! (Just ask him!)
