The only way to do that is to actually buy google, which obviously isn't a valid option.

Apart from that, all you can do is make your site is created properly (using valid HTML etc, so that the search engines (and web browsers) can read it easily), and that the content is as good as possible, so that people will want to look at it. The big search engines have all now developed so far that they "read" pages almost as well as a person would.

There used to be tricks to improve your search ranking, but none of them work any more - they have the opposite effect (most search engines wont list your site at all if you use them, or at best will put you very low down the rankings).

Using the simple methods I mentioned above (and no tricks whatsoever), I managed to improve the rank for a site in a busy market sector.. it was previously outside the top 2 million results, and is now within the top 200.

If your domain name is example.com, you should get the number one ranking for "example" by default, unless your markup is particularly horrid.

If there was a way to do it, everyone would use it. Then who would be at the #1 spot?

It's not hard. All it takes is good design. There are many sites that give you advice on this, off the top of my head one is www.searchenginewatch.com

SEO is like alchemy. It doesn't do anything, people rave about it, and in a few they'll have forgotten all about it.

It certainly has worked for us. Implementing more and more SEO tips has pushed articles on our sites further up which in turn has gotten more revenue for the company.

It may be, possibly, that it also depends on the type of site that you're working with.

I've seen many articles about SEO, and I think that I only ever found one or two things that I didn't consider a part of the standard design/content.

It could just be that my interpretation is skewed because I have high standards for how pages should be created (and their compatibility etc), and how articles should be written - it always annoys me to look at badly designed/written web sites!

That's exactly my point. SEO is just a bunch of tips that I consider part of web design and site architecture 101. Plus, of course, the occasional voodoo ("black hat SEO": think Google bombing).

But, on the other hand, if it helps more and more websites become standards compliant, then it's overall a good thing. Eventually, if SEO maintains its rate of popularity increase, nearly all websites will be standards compliant, and SEO will implode.

First off it's a sub-domain ( yoursite.mainsite.com ), so that's not too good, but it's not the end of the world either. I don't know what effect having a blog rather than a "real" site has, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be good.

Much more importantly tho, try reading the page - you have dates as major headings, there is very little text, and it is rarely descriptive of the pictures.

The file names names of picture aren't relevant (what does "Niagara%20529.jpg" have to do with a squirrel in a bin?), and you haven't set the Alt text either - it should contain a brief description, for people who can't load/see the image(s) for any reason (which also applies to search engines), and for while the page is loading.
