    Re: Automatic Updates Win xp

It sounds like the system was previously on a domain that had a policy to prevent it as it probably was running some firewall program for the domain.

    Check the local security policy.

    Re: Automatic Updates Win xp

If its not showing in the Security Options of the Local Security Policy then bring up Windows Firewall and see if there is a notice that the firewall is partially or fully controled by the LSP.

Is there a firewall client running in the systray? Is the system part of a domain or workgroup now? Its hard to locate since my systems are not controlled.

Could it be possible that you may have some firewall or access restriction on the router?

Also make sure the Auomatic Updates service is enabled.

Though for performance, I'd suggest installing them manually and disabling Auto Updates. Check out SoftwarePatch for manual downloads.

    I don't see a point in automatic updates.I haven't updated my PC after SP2.Just a firewall and a good anti-virus.

    Re: Automatic Updates Win xp

just a couple security updates really needed .. if that ..
Windows Media Player updates .. there is a hole it in somewhere even on SP2 ..
I really dont bother with them myself, even though i put all 63 updates into a self extractable installer .. only used it once ..

    not configured though

Did this just happen? Is it your PC?
When creating a Pre install CD for Windows, you can choose not to install certain components at all, such as this.

not sure .. make sure it was installed from a default XP CD and not a custom one.

With the amount of time spent, you could have reinstalled XP or at least did a Repair install. Do you have the XP CD?

maybe they used something like NLite .. you can remove components for your custom build. But you cant add them back in after the fact, at least not the majority of them, such as AU.

If you have no data on the system to save then make sure to do a complete format and clean new install.

Yeah that messed me up a few times while making some "special" builds for DVRs ... the first time I did it i got XP down from 500 or so MB to just over 200MB .. but had all kinds of errors, nothing worked LOL .. Now i leave the components alone, as you cant put them back if you need them, but just tweak it such as turning off services etc .. and other tweaks I would do normally after it is installed, but they are now done before hand. But at least I can always turn a service back on ..

Also, though not related to AU, there is a file in the windows, inf folder, called Sysoc.inf .. some components can be added/removed that arent on the Add Remove Component list .. by removing "hide" from the corresponding line in that inf file.
