So, the only way to spind down a USB drive is X10.com
Plug the drive into a x10 plug, and install the x10 computer interface.
Any other ideas ?

I'll go through the x10.com, and unable to find that about which device you are talking. Can you put that link here.

Re: USB Drive...Spind down ?
When you're finished backing up, do the "Safely Remove Hardware" thing from the tray, then turn off (or disconnect) the USB drive. Remember, though, it's the stress of starting that puts most strain on a drive so if you have adequate ventillation and the use time isn't that much different than the computer on time, starting and stopping the drive is probably what will be the cause of failure.

The second most difficult part is deciding how you're going to solve the problem.
Actually writing the program (translating your solution into some computer language) is the easiest part.

Re: USB Drive...Spind down ?
Currently this is an idea.
1. Tell X10 to power on drive...wait 1 minute
2. backup data
3. send command to disconnect USB
4. Tell X10 to power off drive
Is there command line code for X10 ? Not sure yet

Is this necessary on WinXP?

Re: [RESOLVED] USB Drive...Spind down ?
I've never corrupted a thumb drive in XP by removing it when XP told me it was in use, but I don't trust Windows as far as I can throw the entire state of Washington with one finger.
