Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
Hi guys,
I appear to have a weird problem where google.com or mail.google.com can't be accessed from my machine. I've run spyware checks but not found the source of the problem as yet. Anyone experienced anything similar?
Thanks

What error page do you get when you try those sites?
(I can get to Google at work, but ALL internet email sites are blocked.)

Sorry, should have mentioned that this is my home PC that I'm having the problem with. It's not happening at work.

Using Firefox, I get "Unable to connect - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com"
Using IE, it's - "The page cannot be displayed"

You can change your dns server addresses.
Go to opendns.org and follow the instructions.Personally ,I would recommend as it has halved my resolving times.

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
my firewall has an inbuilt parental control feature, which has caused this problem for me before. also my firewall can block the ip address of which internet explorer is connecting to.

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
Firewalls often remove headers(privacy) and third party cookies which can interfere with sites like gmail.

Sometimes, my modem gets a bit too hot, and I just unplug it from the mains and leave it to cool. This happens rarely, but it has happened 3 times. Maybe you can try that.
Also, are you connected to a router by any chance?

(Corrected original post)
My modem doesn't burn or anything, it just gets very hot, especially in summer time, so I usually take the power out, leave the modem for a good half hour or 1 whole hour, and then it works fine.

No kregg, I got that what you are trying to say. As you said here in Sri Lanka around 5 months it is too hot, and I'm not using a air cooler in my room. Because of that my router burnt. Just try to pointed same thing you said.

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
try
http://mail.google.com
http://gmail.google.com
try HTTPS:// as well, these sometimes get around filters.
Also if you have Google calendar, log into that, and click the 'Mail' link at the top left.

Depends on how good the admin is at filtering sites .

https://www.vtunnel.com
Usually best to use using FF or Netscape, proxy avoidance, use at your own risk

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
Saying that at college what I do is Remote Desktop back to home, no need to proxy avoid as technically i was using my own ISP.
If you havn't got an icon for Remote Desktop on a restricted machine, create a new text file but with the file extension .RDP, open this and it will open the Remote Desktop application.
just type in your IP address for home and viola.
You will need to have your router set up with port forwarding, but if you can achieve it it fooking rules.

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
Of course, different internet communications use different ports.
The internet for example uses port 80.
On a router (if using one) will not fully know where to direct the communications from a particular port. For remote desktop the port number is 3389, so setting the port forwarding on 3389 to 192.168.2.2 will send all communications to that device.

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
Use your ISP's email address assigned to you, or get your own website/hosting account that come with Email addresses. That should fix it
There is always Hotmail, Yahoo, etc .. all free email servers ..
Though most free servers are blocked anyway.
BTW you could try other countries like google.ca, google.bs (mine), google.co.uk. etc ..

Re: Can't Access Google.com or Gmail
Admins will take eevry step possible to block email sites. The best would be to use a gmail library and use it on your site to access gmail .
You can still try using the mobile version of Google at http://www.google.com/m

LOL .. my ISP's is back up now .. but ill sure be using it as a back up .. until they bann me that is ..
