    Re: new commer to C#

As penagate says. The name VB.NET was used to differentiate it from the VB6 and other pre-.NET versions of VB. While the VB.NET syntax is based on VB6 and earlier the language itself has quite a few differences, hence the need to differentiate. The C# language was developed by Microsoft specifically to be one of the cornerstones of the .NET platform. C# didn't exist before .NET so there is nothing to differentiate.

You'll also note that the ".NET" suffix has been dropped as of the 2005 versions, including Visual Basic and Visual Studio. The marketing job of lifting awareness has been done and Microsoft's current position is that everything is .NET by default.
