access a computer over lan

How do I connect to a computer over lan thats connected to my router?

setup a home/office network. by going to my network places and click setup home or small office network...do it on both computer and ull be ablew to share files

But i need to be able to access files anywhere not just that 1 folder.

right click on the folder you want to share and got to properties. then click the sharing tab.

you can share your c:\ drive although it is not recommended if you do add $ to the end of the share name, you will only be able to access it if you create a shortcut to it though

If you have set to use File and Print sharing then there is an Administrative share in the root of your drives that is designated with "C$". It shouldnt be deleted or modified.

Then you can enter in the run box or explorer adddress bar - "\\ComputerName\C$" and press enter and you will start exploring the other systems c drive if you have permissions.

Says it cannot find the drive name even though i tried my computer name and network name. Isn't there a file viewer or some program that will do this?

yes .. install same program on both PCs ... only need the server set on the PC's you want to access .. it will ask you when it installs .. and just use the viewer from your main PC .. they have a java viewer also for browser based (optional) .. uses port 5900 by default though i'd change that if you are opening it remotely .. 5800 is for the java. You then access it like you are sitting in front of it. Also, Ultra VNC has file transfer, chat, and much more .. compared to the standard VNC app. Oh yeah, and its free.

If you are on a local network then there is no need to use vnc but it will work, just overkill.

You may have the Firewall turned on if running XP SP-2.

ya i just mistyped it. Is there a way to get all the computer names running on my network(computer network name)?

if they are all XP PC's then yeah just share the folders you want. eg. C: drive.
Also adjust Windows Firewall, add File and Printer Sharing .. or just disable the firewall for the time being. You'd need to add the VNC port anyway in the firewall also if you use that.

Click on My Network Places, the Network WorkGroup Name should be there, click on that and any PCs that have Sharing enabled should be listed. MAke sure all Pcs you want to access all are setup with the same Network WorkGroup name.

Weird, the first time it showed all them but now it isnt.

Have you checked if you have File and Print Sharing enabled and also have it as a exception for the Firewall, if enabled?

It was working a min ago but i closed it and re opened it and wasnt.

yes.

Well if each of the following are true then there is a problem.

All systems are in the same Workgroup.
All systems are using File and Print Sharing
All systems firewall are either Off or On with an exception for "file and print sharing".
All systems are connected to a Router with patch cable.
All systems are connected directly to each other without a router using a pass through cable
etc.

are you using the correct cable for conecting the pc to router, i dont think a crossover cable works.
