I fear the price though. Still waiting to see what the storage amount and price is. Wouldn't mind not havign to carry 2 devices around anymore. My iPod and my RAZR.

The price tag isn't so bad. I was just hoping they could fit in a 30 gig hard drive in it instead of just 4/8 gig flash memory. Good price if you plan on getting a new phone and an iPod nano in the future. Plus it already includes a 2 year Cingular contract.

lol includes a 2 year contract? more like you are obligated to pay cingular for 2 years. And yeah i guess the price isn't terrible just more than i'd like to spend.

the fact that (in the US at least) they are only going to release the phone to cingular wireless customers, its going to affect how many customers they can reach with it.

There are millions and millions of Verizon Wireless, Sprint/Nextel, AllTel, T-Mobile subscribers that can't get the thing if they want it.

Wonder if they will release a non phone version for the people who don't want it/can't use it as one...

I think the chances are very good that they will unlock it after the contract with Cingular expires. A good thing for people who don't to go with Cingular as they won't be buying the version 1 iPhone and hopefully will have more storage and 3G by then. Will probably be about 2 years though. From what I hear the main reason they went exclusive to Cingular is that they are the only company that offers all services the iPhone supports.

i believe i read some where that the contract with cingular only lasts through 2009.

well I don't know where you guys all live, but in the US, phones are generally proprietary to the carrier, because we support so many different cellular technologies.

Cingular operates on GSM, while most of the other major carriers (other than T-Mobile) operate on CDMA.

So its not even a matter of "unlocking" the phone. They would have to make certain models for certain carriers.

I just think by making it exclusive to cingular, they are missing out. I might have bought one to replace my aging iPod if I didn't have to pay a bunch for a phone I can't even use.

True but popular phones often appear with other services after their exclusivity contract expires. And I don't think it is a big deal adding a new standard. Can probably be done with just a software upgrade.
