What you are after is a piece of software that will do a process called Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This is a common requirement and one that has been solved several times - but with varying degrees of success. In fact there are many applications that can do this, but the accuracy of their results is often reflected in their price tag.

If you have Microsoft Office installed then you should have a "Microsoft Office Document Scanning" item on the office tools menu - this will allow you to scan and OCR the pages - although I currently only use it for scanning, so cannot vouch for its OCR capabilities.

Another alternative is to check out http://www.simpleocr.com/ which provides a free OCR application, and a plugin that can even be used in your own applications.

    Hope this helps.
