Some of the facts are a bit exaggerated. A tiny spotted eagle ray like that would be unlikely to have a spine of that size. Those rays get pretty big. That was a small one, and wouldn't have all that much of a spine. Enough to do some serious damage, but not a foot long.

Bertakis was apparently trying to remove the three-foot-wide spotted eagle ray from the boat when he was stung, police Cmdr. Mike Oh said.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. I guess you are never too old to be dumb. Stingrays are not exactly aggressive animals. The spine in the tail is not a particularly effective weapon, because it is so easy to avoid.

The old geezer prob picked up the stingray and was showing it off to his grand daughter when it had had enough then BANG, barb in the chest!
