With a name like FishCake, one can only assume that it's some kind of ID. Perhaps he was feeling a little shellfish that day.

The London Undergrounds are very crowded, you need an oyster card to mussel your way through the throngs.

An Oyster card is a prepaid card that you can 'top up' periodically at various points in the London Underground, and you get discounted peak fares on subway trains and buses. Tourists can use them too; if you're visiting London and plan to be there more than a few days you might consider getting one, might save you money. Fares for non-Oyster card holders are going up yet again.
They can save you time, too; instead of queuing to buy a ticket and then putting your ticket through a machine that successfully reads it only 50% of the time, you can just slap your wallet down on a reader and the doors open as if by magic.
They really are quite cool.

I actually don't register mine due to not liking the idea of the goverment knowing exactly where i go.
The downside of that of course is that if i lose it i lose any money on it.
