    Question

Me and dennis were talking on ICQ about all the high school shootings that were going on..and i mentioned that when i was in high school, a friend of mine brought a gun to school.

My question is.... What would you do? would you go to the proper authorities?? or would you just keep it to yourself?

i personally would mind my own business.

    That is a tough question...

If I knew he wasn't going to do anything with it and was just showing off that he could get one then I wouldn't tell, but if he was acting a little strange or depressed lately I would probably tell...

Because if someone was killed because I didn't tell anyone I would feel awefull for the rest of my life.

Well he told me that it was his protection from rival gangs....and he wasnt depressed or anything..just quiet...but usually those are the one you have to watch out for.

yeah, I guess you're right. If he was just showing off or if he wasn't depressed or anything than I wouldn't tell. But I would definately tell him how stupid he was in bringing it in the first place.

    Responsibility anybody?

Hey fellows & girls, don't you believe in taking some responsibility for helping make this place a better world to live in?

While I might do some risk assessment, I would tend to rat on the guy because I think it is the responsible action to take.

I avoid taking serious risks that could be fatal, but am willing to gamble just a little bit. If I thought I had a good chance of ratting on him without getting killed or seriously injured, I would do it.

Perhaps the principal could arrange a "random" locker search? If you said you knew someone had a gun in their locker but refused to say who, then he would have to search everyone's. Your friend would get caught, but it would be unconnectable to you.

Smile You all bring up good points

But like i said i would have not ratted because of the simple fact of retaliation and the fact that i believe in minding my own business to a point.

Maybe if i was the only person this guy showed the gun too..and then i went and ratted... then maybe he wouldnt have done anything too me.. maybe he would have just confronted me one day later on and said "your a dick..why did you tell??!!"

but i seriously doubt it would have turned out that way..

i guess it was just a different type of environment at the school i went too..but unless it affected you directly...you didnt talk about it.

    Interestingly enough to mention:

I was talking too some of my neighbors tonight..and
the "all these high school shootings" topic came up...and one of my friends said "one reason why their is never any high school slaughters in los angeles like columbine is because someone else might shoot back"

and as sad as it is..it is true... i am not the only one that went to my school that can say they seen..or knew someone who carried a gun with them in , for whatever reason that person might have to carry the gun.And also for the fact that their is metal detectors in the school that i went to and most of the school administartors carried handheld metal detectors.

    Red face welll/.....

well i donno i mean the moral duty would be that u report this to the higher authority.the thing is unless we do something about it nothing is going to be done about it.and as pertains to someone showing his gun to only a single person that's highly impossible cos such elements try to boast around and tell everyone how great they are. so i would have reported this to the authorities even under the condition of being anonymous thats one way to be secure.i wouls surely report it to the principal?wouldn't u?

Guess it depends on where you live...
Crime is low where i live. Murders are rare. The only murder in my county in the last who-knows-how-many-years got more coverage than the OJ simpson trial.
I dont think anyone ever brought guns to school. Not that no one owned any. I've owned a shotgun since i was about 8.

In my county, murders are rare as well. But there are a lot of crimes. July 5, 1998, we were lighting off our leftover fireworks and firecrackers(from 4th of July), and we hear sirens, well, we think somebody may have called the police because we were lighting off firecrackers(illegal in Va), so we hide them. There are about 25 cop cars and a helicopter circling my neighbors house. Somebody runs out the back of the house, and you hear a lot of comotion and a fight. When it's over, we see my neighbors boyfriend in handcuffs, arrested for posession of drugs, I think he was dealing them too.

About every 3 months, usually during spring and summer, somebody escapes from jail, or prison, or something. There are always helicoptors, and sirens.. Then we hear about it on the news..

I'm getting a little bit off the subject now... If I were to see somebody who had a gun, I would most definetly report him. I wouldn't do anything if I saw somebody with a knife. I admit, I have brought one to school before. It was an accident though. I had just went camping during the weekend, and I didn't empty all the camping gear out of my backpack, when I was on the bus, I pulled one out and was like "oh ****".. nothing happened though. Nobody knew I had it. I have also known other people who have brought knives to school. They weren't the killing kind though. One person brought in a swiss-style knife(the kind with a lot of tools), and another person I know brought in a spyder-co(small serrated lockback). The only time I would report somebody who brought a knife to school, would be if they told me they were going to stab somebody.

    Mindspring... hahaha (just kidding)

Anyway, we were actually allowed to have knifes at my school. The blade had to be shorter than (i think) 3 inches, and it couldnt be openable with one hand.(which my jackknife was)

People would bring knives to my school sometimes, I think my best mate did fairly often, a bootknife or whatever it's called. Swiss army knives were pretty common, although I'm pretty sure you weren't meant to have them. I don't remember anyone having any particularly fearsome kind of knife on them. No guns though, this was just a town in south west England after all.

I don't know what I would have done, I'm not really familiar with the whole gun-ownership culture there seems to be in America. It would have been a very big deal if someone did bring a gun in my school.

dont stereotype the whole country. Guns aren't a problem in most areas.
But check out scotland. Government issued guns.
    Extremely low home burglary rate.

Well yeah I try not to stereotype, but it's kinda hard when about 95% of the opinion expressed here by Americans is pro-guns. All I meant by it is that I get the impression that it seems natural for people to own guns. It's pretty exceptional here.

Other than recreation (i.e. clay pigeon shooting or hunting), why does anyone need a friggin gun? Talk about provoking the situation. I'd bet money that 90% of people only have one because "everyone else does". If they were properly licenced and governed, nobody would need one for protection.

dont stereotype the whole country. Guns aren't a problem in most areas
No, but areas where they are a problem, you get occurances like school shottings. 2 in the past month or so!! The last one in the UK (even then it was Scotland) was Dunblane many years ago, and that was a man not a bloddy kid. You have only yourselves to blame.

it's the least powerful out of the 1911, and the Raging Bull, but it'll kick both of their asses due to the high capacity(15 rounds as opposed to seven for the colt, and six for the Raging Bull).

Has anyone actually used a Gun ?

I did When I was about 12 Years old. Wait ....
That was on a Beach and in a stall where you have
to shoot 15 or so balloons continously in 15 chances
to win Prizes. I missed the Prize by three Shots.
But hey....I was just standing 5 metres from the
    Balloons...no big deal.

Yes. At school I've used the LSW and L90 (that's a piece of crap, BTW). The SA-80 is much nicer but still not too wonderful

I get the impression that the SA-80 is pants. Lotta people seem to think we'd be better off buying M-16s for a while and dumping SA-80s while we make something better.

The M16(the US Military actually uses the M4 Carbine now, which is a shortened version of the M16A2) sucks!

It jams frequently, and must be kept clean at all times or misfire will occur. The AK-74 has about the same size cartridge, but has the reliability of it's cousin, the AK-47. I think the US should switch to using the AK-74... But that's just MHO..

Has anyone actually used a Gun ?
Yep.. Pistols, Revolvers, Shotguns, Rifles(hunting), Assult Rifles, Machine Guns, Sub Machine Guns, Etc..
