Help with Delphi [URGENT]

Hello everybody,

I have never worked on Delphi, now I need to make some fixes in a software that is developed with Delphi 3. I do not have Delphi 3 neither I can find it somewhere.

Can I open the Delphi 3 project in Delphi 5 or 6? Do we need to migrate it or it will just run?

Thanks.

That depends entirely on how it was written. Be prepared to completely rewrite it - then, if it doesn't need that much work, you're ahead of the game.

Depending on the size and complexity of the program, and your level of experience, two other avenues suggest themselves:

1) Get Delphi 2006 (there's a free version) and write the program from scratch, if it has to be written in Delphi for some reason.

2) Write it from scratch in whatever language you normally use.
The most difficult part of developing a program is understanding the problem.
The second most difficult part is deciding how you're going to solve the problem.
Actually writing the program (translating your solution into some computer language) is the easiest part.

Please indent your code and use tags around it to make it easier to read.

Re: Help with Delphi [URGENT]

Hello Al42,

I cannot develop the system from the scratch as it's not a small program, it's a large system and I need to make a little fix in it.

Isn't there any way to open it in newer versions of Delphi?

Thanks.

I went from 1 to 2006, so I don't know - you'd have to try it. At worst you'd throw all kinds of errors that you'd have to fix.

Which way you end up doing it (or if you do it at all) would depend on how much doing it is worth. If it keeps the human race from extinction, any effort is trivial. If the function the program performs can be performed by a program you can buy for $250, it may not pay to even try to fix it. Only you can decide which way is the most cost effective.
