formula perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W
How do I calculate the length of a fence to surround a pool in the
shape of a rectangle at a distance of 5 feet from the pool.
The price of the fence will then be calculated at $2 per foot.
I know that I have to use the formula perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W.. But how to I account for the distance of 5 feet from the pool
say L=2' and w=3' then the perimeter is 2(2)+2(3)=10' but how do I calculate the perimeter of the fence that is a distance of 5 feet from the pool??

Re: formula perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W
If you knew the L and W of the pool you can use...
W = ((2 * 5) + Pool W) * 2
L = ((2 * 5) + Pool L) * 2

Re: formula perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W
W = ((2 * 5) + Pool W) * 2
L = ((2 * 5) + Pool L) * 2
trying to understand your formula what does the inner bracket (2*5) represent and what is the outer bracket *2 represent?
then would I just add the W and L results together to get the perimeter?

eranga262154, you've got the L and W of the pool the wrong way round

Re: formula perimeter of a rectangle is 2L + 2W
As in eranga's diagram above, you can see that at each corner there are 5 more metres of fence horizontally and 5 more metres of fence vertically. Ie, 10m more fence at each corner. There are four corners, hence 40m more fence than the perimeter of the pool is required.
Of course, that's assuming you have square corners. Strictly speaking, you should have rounded corners to ensure that the fence is always 5m from the pool. Thus at each corner there is a quarter of a circle of fence, the circle being 5m in radius. Hence around the whole perimeter there is a full circle, 5m radius, which thus adds an extra 2 Pi r = 10Pi metres over the perimeter of the pool.

Ya it's true zaza,
But cedtech says that "a fence to surround a pool in the shape of a rectangle at a distance of 5 feet from the pool."
So do the answering according to this statement.

But is it the fence or the pool that is rectangular? According to that statement, it is just the pool....

It should say cedtech23. No need to worry much about it. Isn't it?
