Resolved [RESOLVED] [serious] ID3 tag filler-inner?

Well, as the title may suggest i need a program than can query some form of online database or w/e and get me the information on my MP3's. Right now they have NO ID3 tag information at all and are simply named "Artist - Track" (with the odd variation of "(live)" added in at the end.
After an accident with some software that ended up stripping my ID3 data i really need this... Any help?

I'm not sure about the online query, and if it is possible at all. But you should check out an application called Tag&Rename, it has a free trial and it is absolutely excellent for managing ID3 tags, filenames and such. What would have helped you is to make your music files have identical filename as ID3 data. That way if something like that happens you still have the basic data as the name of the file.

There is no way to find out the artist/title of an MP3 simply because it would require stupendously complex decoded waveform analysis and a huge database of pre-analysed tunes.

How about reading directly from the filename? I believe Winamp will use regex to read the filename and 'figure out' the artist-title from it.

I found a program last night that seems to do the trick rather well, however it's limited to fixing 5 files at a time unless i buy it... Trouble is, there is no way of buying it.

Magic MP3 Tagger was its name fom Musicbrainz.
Also found some reviews on Dr Tag, which apprantly works the same way, however this also requires buying...

I know some app's, as Mendhak says, read the fielname and figure out the title and artist from it, but is there an automated way of filling in the information that way? Although it would mean no Album information or anything.

In theory it is actually very easy. CRC checksums. Problem is that depending on what bitrate and frequency it is ripped at, that will change the CRC. So it becomes a huge database that I don't think anyone would want to even attempt to upkeep.

Personally I have been working hard getting my music collection all sorted and accurate info put in including track numbers and year. Almost done. :-\

It isnt too bad. I use iTunes so I can easily select all tracks from 1 album and change the album and artist info at the same time.

Not 100% sure though if it actually populates the ID tag though and not just the library metadata file. I should check on that when I get home.

    Have you tried TagScanner?
I've used it a few times, it's not bad.

I'll take a look at that now.

Cander, i don't use anything like iTunes unfortunatly. These 1000ish mp3's are in the same folder... For some reason they never made it into my main music collection which is really well ordered, that's where they should be off to now...

Well you can use itunes to go ahead and populate the tags then move them off to your main collection. iTunes will automatically create a directory structure of Artist with Album subdirectories and move them to those directories when you change the info. Just makes things alot easier IMHO

Unfortunatly it's failed to recognise any tracks correctly so far... Which is rather bad, unless i'm using it wrong.

I might just try and find a way of making magic tagger work automated. Even though it only does a track every 2 seconds (well, 10 second pause, then does 5 files)

It's a bit of a female dog to set up but it has several modes. Took me a while to figure it out. Persist and you should get it.

    Re: [serious] ID3 tag filler-inner?

    Cheers Marty.

I managed to do this pretty well, only 3 files were tagged incorrewctly, i automated the program with Autohotkey and a VB program... Worked like a charm and renamed 835 files in around 45miutes.

It would have been easier with Tag&Rename... I have over 50.000 files and I sorted everything in a day...

Agreed, Tag&Rename is awesome. You can have it rename the file based in the ID3 tag, or fill in the tag based on the filename and folder.

I think it's actually the only shareware program I've actually bought instead of dumping it when it stopped working.
