A kid walks into a candy store and steals a candy bar. Later that day, he walks into the same store eating the candy bar. When the store clerk asks where he got the candy, he says he stole it earlier. What should the store clerk do?

    Re: Stealing candy

Obviously, you are not entitled to consume the candy bar until the financial transaction has taken place. As soon as it enters the human digestive system the chemical composition of said confection changes, thus causing physical damage to the store-owners property. The youth should be charged with willful damage and tresspass and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. And then shot.

wossname is always getting a little carried away.

I think that prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law is a bit over the top.

A kid walks into a bicycle shop and is harrassed by the owner of said shop. And the name of that kid was...you guessed it, Gary Coleman.

Kind of puts things in perspective...

Its just a matter of not performing a few HTTP GET requests, and all the adverts vanish as if they had never been there at all. You can't punish people for getting value for money.

Actually, I was hoping his posting would simply disappear, then the whole issue would go away..... Plausble deniability. If I were to delete it, then I'd have to put a ban in place at the same time - which I'd prefer not to do.

Slapping him around publicly also raises the point to others that there are some topics best to be avoided in a public forum. Besides, since he made the post, he deserves bit of grief at a minimum

I think I missed the memo on the pirates theme . Does anyone have animation software? If so, modifying my current one to show with the two pirate ones would be really cool. Do my normal one for a second, then one of the above for a moment, then back to my normal, then the other one for a moment. That would be different....

Adblockers are NOT available at the single click of a google search button. VBF does NOT condone the use of such software.

At least one of the above statements evaluates true.

    Re: Stealing candy

I have NoScript extension installed for an extra browsing security and for development and testing purposes, to ensure a site works even without JavaScript. By default the extension disables all scripts, unless I allow a script from certain domain to run. I have allowed VBForums JavaScript to run. But I haven't allowed VBWire (never visit there) and the (multitude of?) advertisement providers; on this page that loaded it would be eyewonder.

NoScript is not specifically an adblocker: I do see advertisements and I can't choose to disable a certain ad. I just don't see the ones that require JavaScript to display in the first place. Because I never visit the advertiser sites and need to have JavaScript running there, I have no reason to enable their domain on NoScript.

If an advertiser decides to make an advertisement dependant of JavaScript, it is their own fault. It is not a fault of an user to have JavaScript disabled. Props to Hewlett-Packard: atleast their ad works even without JavaScript.

VBF could require advertisers to ensure their ad works without JS. Or you could change things so that the script files are on VBF server, in which case you'd skip the "feature" of NoScript for individual domain disabling; although that would be just a workaround.

The only grief I get of this is the increased delay until I can play Civilization IV I don't see how I could have done something wrong, for the above reasons.

I have to agree with Merri here, he's not using and adblocker at all, he's just running with the equivalent of having Javascript disabled.

    No malicious intent with that.

Good point - but the moral of the story is don't post that you aren't seeing ads or I might have to give you some grief

The ads should degrade down to a picture if required features aren't supported. As such - I agree, javascript shouldn't be required for an ad

Wear your pirate avatar if you wish to be taken seriously. Everyone knows that people with eyepatches and parrots on their shoulders have important things to say.

If I didn't post, you wouldn't know they're not displaying. Also, this is the only forum I know that cares about talking about the ads; which is why I don't pay attention on the subject.

How interesting, I think I've seen much more ads lately on the site... I wonder why...

Maybe there is a setting for "Merri's ad-level from 0%-100%, set at: 200%".

The advertisers must be fixing their ads, since I don't believe we've added any new spots in a while.
