    Question: About programming?

    Hello eveyrone,

I have a question about general computer programming/game development, im a bit young, to decide what to choose as my career as am only 15 years old, but i was wondering, if for example i continue for game development, in C++, or continue for other languages, will i need to be very good in maths, its a stupid question i know, but its just i dont have anyone to consult, on what i want, and some friends of mine say you dont actually use math that lot in software developing or game developing. I know you will need maths, because its used in every career almost, but i mainly like on what level, Algebra, Calcus??

    Thanks in Advance

If you want to do game programming for desktops, you need to be really good in math, and physics. Well there is always jobs you can take that doesn't require that much math. But the more hardcore job you want (i.e. engine design), then math is an every day tool to get by with your life. Physics is also becoming a big part of games these days. With new physics accelerators comming to the market it will be use of more and more people with general knowledge of physics.

One of the most important things is to know how math and physics work, and be able to see how you can approximate it with less functions then the real world theorems. Thats a hard part.

    Welcome to the forum!

I've used calculus to develop a formula to convert x/y coordinates in an non-square matrix into absolute positions - for storing classroom conflicts...

Algebra, geometry - calculus - all lead to a logical way of thinking that is a foundation to programming.

When someone asks for help with a simple routine in VB I can always tell those people who will never become true developers - those that are trying to learn the syntax of something (like ADO or SQL) and then thinking they can actually program.
