My Picks:
PC:
Action: Duke Nukem 3D
Strategy: Civilization
RPG: Fallout
Honorable Mention:
Quake, for being one of the first games that allowed for mods. Other than that I thought it was one of the worst games ever (Maybe it was because I was a Duke fan).
Half-Life, for being one of the best FPSers with a story and for having the Counter-Strike mod
Wolfensein 3D, For being the game that started FPSers in my mind, not DOOM.
Other
Commador 64: Predator & Blue Max
Whats yours?

I thought Final Fantasy 8 was a real let-down, I played it for a while, got about 10 or 15 hours into the game, then just got bored. The different game style was a bit crap, especially the weapon upgrades.
I was also a Duke 3D fan, IMO it was much more fun to play than Quake. You have to hand it to Quake for technical achievement though - the original Quake for DOS was written in straight C (and I think a little ASM) with software rendering for the graphics. Bearing in mind the computers of the time (486s?) this was a remarkable feat of programming. Just as remarkable I think is that WinQuake, the later, Windows 95 version used only GDI graphics! The Quake source code is available online somewhere now if you're interested in how they did it.
Well anyway, I was still a Duke fan
Fallout was a great RPG, I agree with that. Ultima Online was great until they messed it up with their 'bug fixes' and 'combat enhancements' which basically ruined the fun of it.
Right now, the best action game in my humble opinion is Allegiance, and online space flightsim where you and your team dogfight and build bases in different sectors. It's an ingenious combination of RTS and flightsim which works really well. Unfortunately the game isn't that popular, and the most I've seen on the servers recently is about 100 people, but there's still almost always a game going on.
Civilisation I will agree with you on. It's still a briliant game. I've spent many many hours playing that.
For flight sims, my favourites were the original Wing Commander games (1 and 2, and their addon packs), they were excellent. Shame they changed the style so much with WC3 and later.
Best adventure game is really hard to choose... It's Either Sam & Max, the Monkey Island games, or Space Quest 3 The Sierra adventure games don't seem that popular (especially Leisure Suit Larry) but I always liked em.
Best games on the BBC: Elite and Dogfight. And Chucky Egg.
Amiga: Wings, Wings of Fury, Skidmarks, Syndicate (it always seemed better on the Amiga).
Harry.

I think all but FF8 were good games.
Ahh another Duke fan. I had a record of 123 wins 3 losses. All 3 losses were avenged. I miss playing that game.
I honestly get a hard-on every time I see or read about Duke Forever. If 3D realms does all the things they had planed for the game, it has the possibility of being the GOD of all games. Damn stiffy go down
I never really dug Ultima, dunno why.
Wing Commander was great.
Adventure: I would say anything made by Lucas Arts. If I had to pick one, I would go with Full Throttle. I loved that game.

Full Throttle was cool, but just too short unfortunately. Needs a sequel or sommit.
I never played Duke online, played a very brief modem deathmatch once but it didn't last long, parent's phone line an all that.

I agree fully with you there, Full Throttle needed to be longer. I heard rumors last year that tentatively in 2002 they would start making Full Throttle 2. But it could end up like numerous other games and just be dropped.

Hey thanks, you reminded me I have to log on and refresh my house. Yes, even though I haven't played it in months, I still have my account running and pay my $10 a month like the idiot that I am. I suppose I live in hope that maybe one day the whole development team will be involved in a horrible plane crash and have to be replaced with people that actually take some notice of what the players want in the game. Maybe all my characters won't have to go to waste

My favorite rpgs are the Final Fantasy Games (again, every one exept 8- i got bored with it too) and the Ultima series- all of them. Martian dreams, Ultima Underworld, etc. I had this great motorcycle game on commodore 64 called Kickstart. Other 64 games worth mentioning are Gorf, *****s. Favorite atari 2600 game: Warlords. Favorite Amiga games: James Pond 2: robocod, and anything by Psygnosis. Favorite IBM games include Baldur's gate I and 2 (just beat 2), Driver, and a neat little racing game about rc cars called Re-Volt. It has many secrets, secret cars, secret levels, and even a secret game mode. Mucho fun and the graphics rock.

I hated Dungeon Keeper. The theme was great, I just didn't like the game. Too much like SimCity without all the options.

Odd Person...I love it! The best thing, IMO is the simple-ness of the game, so you can concentrate on winning...

Oh, well I don't think I ever got the winning bit right... as far as I know you just build rooms and stuff... you can use spells to heal/harm creatures, and there's the call to arms, but you don't seem to have much control over the actual creatures. It's like playing Command & Conquer by just harvesting tiberium and hoping your buildings will make troops, and hoping your troops will go off and do something.

I would have to say the game that's kept me enthralled the longest was Civilisation II.
I have recently aquired 'Call to Power II' (which is the same type of game) and that is very good too.

Yeah Starcraft is a great game. And Blizzard is with out a doubt the best game company in the world. Since they have been known as Blizzard they have never had a game that "Flopped". They have also never made a game that they have not made money on.
I would have to give Dungeon Keeper a thumbs down. It was a good concept but it just wasnt that great in my mind.
Rainbow Six without a doubt was a great game, if the graphics were a hair better I think it could have been one of the best.
DeusEx was another good game. But I think it should have had more blood in it. I know it sounds morbid, but when you shot guys this little drop of blood came out.
I think that all games like that should have guys with bodies like in Hitman where there were multiple bend points and they actually interacted with walls and tables.

To the person that said they didt like DK2:
Give it another try, i didt like it at all when i first played it coz i loved the first 1 and was expecting it to basically be DK1 with souped up graphics. After about a week tho, when i got used to it, i couldt drag myself away from it. It really is an excellent game. Shame they stopped making DK3
