    Rating System

    Hi Guys,

I find the rating system frustrating in that I cannot rate someone more than once until I spread some reputaion around.

If I find a member was helpful, and rate them, I may have the requirement to so
    so again before anyone else.

I understand the rational behind preventing multiple succesive missused rates against someone, however, there are legitimate times when you need to do it.

Currently, it is defeating the purpose of rating someone - worse yet, opening
up the way to have to make a spurious rate to clear your slate.

Sorry but this has been discussed before and at this point it isn't going to change. Be happy though since the spread used to be twice what it is now. Oh, and about the spurious ratings - don't do that. It could be a reason to ban someone.

It really is a problem though.

I'm in a small group - mostly DB-forum people - that spend a tremendous amount of time on some of the threads we work on.

These are not one-post, oh-that-was-great and now you are worthy of a rep.

I don't know what the formula is right now but it should take into account the number of posts done between a rep and an attempted subsequent rep.

    Oh well

*** Read the sticky in the DB forum about how to get your question answered quickly!! ***

Please remember to rate posts! Rate any post you find helpful - even in old threads! Use the link to the left - "Rate this Post".

True but its allot of Hacking to try to change anything so best to make a suggestions to vB and wait for a future release.

The "spread" is 10. So you cant re-rep until you have rep'd 10 others inbetween attempts. I just keep track of the reps I give out on my private calendar so I know exactly how many are needed etc.

Oh and maybe mix it up a bit more and get out of the DB forum and into the sun once in a while

    The "spread" is 10.
    That is insane.

We are all promoting reps, to the extent that most have pointers in thier sigs to "Rep if helpful".
What if a person helped on two occasions?

So, why cant the spread be no more than three consecutive reps, then a hiatis of one maybe two against someone else (to prevent overdoing it, alow only single reps for a given post)

    Take a poll.
I bet there are tons of members who would like to rate consecutively........

PS. Guys, I love your work.

    Re: Rating System

Well as we have had previous discussions on the "spread", they all have resulted in the same - no new Hacks or tweaks.

Eventually what goes around comes around and will balance out eventually. Everyone seems to like the time duration limit but it cant be done unless vB puts it into some future release.

    Scenario:
A new member posts, gets assistance and reps. Six months later comes back with a new problem.
Gets help from the same member, and decides that answer was on the money and the support was outstanding. The new member cannot rate the helper!

If you have flogged this to death before, Ok. I'm unaware of that.
However, this is the Feedback forum and I have a legitimate concern.
I think IMHO that the formula is outdated and not representative of the wider community.

If you can't rate the person post in the thread two little words:

What if you weren't looking fo a help but simply across some very nice and slick piece of code or perhaps you liked how someone handled someone elses attitude or something like that ... Person deserves to be rated but you really can't. You can say bookmark that thread and come back later but that's no way to be reasonable.

Yes, this topic has been discussed several times already. There have been lots of great suggestions, but ultimately, we limit ourselves to what the forum software can do.

As a compromise, I've once again reduced the spread. it has now changed from 10 to 6. It won't go lower than that.

Do I hear 5!??? Anyone? Going Once... Going twice..... SOLD 6 it is

    Thanks Brad!

(How do we make a suggestion for changes to vB?.. I was just reading thru this and thought it would be cool that the higher your post count is, the lower your spread. Someone who has been around for a long time and has 29K + posts should be able to give consecutive reps... since they are not likely to abuse it having been around so long..where as someone new must spread.)

Rhino - My point exactly! - Thankyou.

    Brad - Thanks.

    Static - Brilliant Solution.
(However, its the new guys that may need to rep high to as they get advise/help. I would see your breakdown as Eg. 6 (as opposed to 20), 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).

    Re: Rating System

I have to agree with Bruce. In the ASP.NET forum it is usually Mendhak and myself helping out users (although it is almost always Mendhak providing the solutions ), so how would they give us reps if they gave us a rep a couple of weeks ago?

Perhaps they can only give one rep per user per thread?
    e.g.
new user gets help from both myself and Mendhak avfter about 30+posts of chatting and discussing. The new user can give a rep to both of us but only once to each in that thread. This provides the facility that they can then provide a further rep to Mendhak in a separate thread should he have helped them there also?
Life is one big rock tune
