good RPG possibly making it to online too

ok, so, i've decided to make my own RPG/MMORPG and i've also decided that i actually want to finish it and make it good, therefor i want ppl to help me with it. So, basic info so far is the character choices, i have: Knight, Battlemage, Ranger, Assassin, Musketeer, Necromancer, Thief, Morphmage (changes to animals to attack), and a Robot (lol, friends idea). After that, you lvl ur character and his weapon, adding upgrades to the weapon. So the jobs i want done are:

    1) sum1 to create sprites based on my concept art
    2) sum1 to create a storyline
    3) sum1 to make a map
    4) sum1 to find perfect sounds for the game
    5) sum1 to help figure out how to upload ur character online and fight other ppl with him
and i will program the battles
of course this is being done in visual basic, (except for possibly the online aspect) i am serious about this, for more info or to check out the progress, visit the website <freewebs.com/magicandmetal> to apply for helping, leave a reply here. If you help, i will add your name or alias to the credits, and who knows...if the game is good enuf, u might just get recognized =) thx every1

I want to help too, I have a plan to create an on-line game.
    Everyone may play for free.
I think the character must be in database.
I'm looking for free SQL Server Hosting over the internet.

alright, which part do u want to help with? and also, i'm not sure if ur saying u want to do my game, or make ur own, but the whole database thing you were talkin bout is completely over my head, i don't know that much about vb, my friend said mayb use flash to load your save file and use ur save file character to fight other ppls save file characters. So basically it would just be a battle arena online, the way u said it, it seems like you want a whole adventure online....can u clear this up for me? and tell me what u wanna help with ?

Re: good RPG possibly making it to online too

I have knowledge/experience on all of those jobs.

    1) I can create sprites
    2) I do write stories (but I can't publish)
    3) I do create maps in starcraft, warcraft 2 & 3, Half-life
    4) I have a band (rock, alternative, rock metal, rock sent, acoustic)
    5) I have a complete set of game development tools (VB2005, VC#2005, DirectX SDK, NUnit, etc.)

The only problem is a free SQL Server Hoster (I prefer v2005).
Look for a good one (Large capacity - 100+MB).

Well i could help to, but please don't make go back to vb6.
    I suggest managed Direct3D and vb.net 2005.
    I have several 3D packages Maya 7, TrueSpace7 and Bryce 5.5 and also VS.net 2005.

I have several books on game programing including all volumes of Game Programming Gems.

    He has a point!!

Games and VB6 just don't like eachother that much. (it's not a full object oriented language)

I know most people in this forum seem to prefer DirectX. I don't know about you, but Managed direct3D is so slow on my pc that I can't hardly run the SDK-examples . (Ati Mobile Radeon 9700 though).

On top of that DirectX is not crossplatform. Remember that graphical designers often use Macintosh. How will you explain them that they will never be able to run the game they are working on.

    Also, imho OpenGl is easier.

    Why don't you give SDL.Net & Tao.Net a try? I'm sure you won't regret it.
    - OpenGL
    - Crossplatform
    - Fast and easy

Good luck finding one that lets you remotely access it, most free hosts (my paid host doesn't even allow it) don't. You're better off going to a garage sale and finding a junky laptop/pc. Wipe its memory, install a ram boosting program, and install sql & a decent firewall. Then hook it up to your internet connection, plug it in, and leave it on & forget.

Don't worry, we're in the same boat. I'm trying to program an mmorpg, just in VB6. I'd reccomend looking at the network FAQs here and learning how to use the winsock control.

For the graphics I'd reccomend using bitblt, quick and easy to learn plus it works smoothly. Of course if you know directx already then by all means use that!

Here's a tutorial on the basic theory of an mmorpg:

    Yup,

you shouldn't worry too much. Just continue what you're doing. Make a mess of it, then restart. Then make a mess of it again, restart again. And so on, and eventually you will end up with something you can and will be proud of. All this messing can only make you stronger.

I was just trying to warn you that it will be a mess. But actually it doesn't matter! Good luck and have fun!

    check out this site
    www.questfor3d.com
download the game and play it. If any of you are remotely interested I will release the source and let anyone learn off it, modify it, build it farther or whatever. It has sound, music, rain, day/night time effects. It pushes direcxt7 to the limit, except never got arrond to alpha blending. It has a basically fully funtinal map makker. Enemy capabilitys. and much more...
    Software languages known:
    Qbasic - TI-Basic - Liberty Basic - Visual Basic 6
    Software API's known:
    Directx 7 and 8
Internet languages, in the process of learning:
    HTML - JAVASCRIPT - PHP - CSS - MYSQL - AJAX

I'm NOT talking about a website.
Coz it is a MMORPG we need a database to store the players' characters data that can be remotely access.

Do you have any idea now?

Me and 2 other people have been working on a MMORPG for a bit (off and on) and you can see more of it here.

    http://www.burningstormstudios.com/forum/

you run into a bunch of problems on VB, if you can go to C++
