The only improvement I can think of over OE is the interface for browsing newsgroups. What do the other newsreaders have?

    Where to begin:

    Built in yEnc Decryption
Built in message combining (so all you see is one line that really includes 10 or 100 or more)
    Better Searching
Some have built in RAR decrompression with PAR
multithreading (multiple downloads going at the same time)
Auto search of other boards for missing parts...
some have auto "gallery" (Not sure what it does since I havent tried that one yet)
    etc
    etc

the one I have is News File Grabber. works great.. but looking at some others..

oh yeah.. and if there are more than 1000 posts.. u dont have to keep hitting the download headers button until its done... they ACTUALLY load all of them

and NFG has a filter that removes stuff... like..broken multiparts (so u dont get through the whole thing only to find out u are missing one part!

means what? whenever I download new news messages it automatically deletes two months old messages. For example, let's say, today is july 06th if i download news messages it automatically deletes the news messages older than may 6th. I think it's clear for you now.

Can you guys suggest me a better news reader? I want to keep all downloaded news messages. I heard that Outlook express is the best news reader. that's why I use OE.

    Thanks.

Planet Gravity. Agent (not free - $29). Look in alt.computer.freeware - someone's always talking about one newsreader or other. (I've been using Agent for usenet and email for many years.)
The most difficult part of developing a program is understanding the problem.
The second most difficult part is deciding how you're going to solve the problem.
Actually writing the program (translating your solution into some computer language) is the easiest part.

Ah, now that I have OE here.

Tools > Options... > Maintenance tab.

Uncheck the "Delete news messages..." bit. Or give it a higher limit.

Agent can store them as long as your hard drive lasts. There are settings for which ones to delete and how to determine when to delete them. (With bodies, without bodies, read or unread - never, X number of days, etc.)

Don't confuse server retension with client storage, though. If you see a header dated 3 months ago and try to download the body, chances are you won't be able to - because the server doesn't retain the posts that long. Your client - OE, Agent, whatever you use - can download headers without downloading bodies. (It's much faster to download all the headers, then just download the bodies you want to read.) You still see the headers listed years later, but the bodies are no longer on the server for download.

But if you download the body and don't delete it, you'll be able to read it as long as you want into the future - years, decades, whatever you want.

This is on all decent usenet clients, not just Agent.
