    IT Jobs in Policing

    Hey all,

I was just wondering if anyone around here has an IT-related job in the field of policing, and if so, how do you like it?

I really enjoy working with databases and statistics, but only where it's um...I don't want to say "relevant"....I guess where it's helping society, even in a roundabout kind of way. I currently work in a hospital so I enjoy the fact that the reports I generate and programs I write for the staff collect meaningful data on which to base important decisions.

I've been thinking about asking the police department in my city if they have any IT type jobs because I think it would be a very rewarding job to have.
Luckily I have a very good source inside the station so he can find the answers to some of these questions for me already....I just thought I'd look for any similar experiences on this board.

I don't, but if you're willing to share whatever you learn about this, it'd be great.

Working for a city is trade off - while monetary compensation is noticeably less then elsewhere they usually offer better benefits package.
Also, from the "learning" perspective I doubt you will get anywhere far from where you are now (technically that is). So if you like more of a static job then it's for you.

Sincerely wish you best of luck!

I've never worked for a police departement before, but I did build an "Incident Tracking System" for the security department of a major corporation once.

That was way, way cool 'cause I had access to all kinds of stuff no one else knew about.

Basically, however, it was pretty much what you are referrign to Grudge...all statistical stuff concerning what happened, where, when and who/what was involved. Should be a fun gig. Good luck.

Don't get me wrong, I like my job at the hospital (about 30% programming, 50 % stats, and 20% meetings).

I'm just looking ahead for future possibilities as well and I thought this would be a cool avenue to head down.
