Resolved [RESOLVED] installing MSDE on machine with SQL Server 05 client

    hello,

is it possible to install msde on a machine which contain the SQL Server 2005 client.
Machine is Windows XP Service Pack 2

i have been trying to install msde but have been getting some errors during the install.

    such as
    1. "Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(unknown package id). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem."

    2. Also getting errors concerning MDAC: "An Error has occured registering this installation of SQL Server Desktop Engine with MDAC"

when i 1st tried to install i had to remove the password option from msde as it wouldnt install when trying to give it a password i got error in the log:

An error was encountered during connection to server: 1
    Ending custom action UpgDetectBlankSaLogin().
    Action ended 12:04:37: UpgDetectBlankSaLogin.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B. Return value 3.

does anyone know what could be the issue

Are you installing MSDE (the SQL 2000 version) or SQL Express (the SQL 2005 version)?

Installing MSDE (2000 RelA) on a PC that has the SQL Server 2005 client installed (the enterprise manager).
What version of MDAC does SQL Server 2005 use?
Would it conflict with MSDE 2000

Re: installing MSDE on machine with SQL Server 05 client

Google for "installing MSDE on SQL 2005 machine"

got me some links sayings that 2000 must be installed first then 2005.

Are you willing to uninstall the SQL 2005 clients and attempt the MSDE install from that point?

If you do uninstall the SQL 2005 clients you might want to visit the MSDN site and get the MDAC version checker to verify the MDAC install on your machine. Version 2.8, I believe, would be a good version to have installed on your system prior to the MSDE install.

I have a laptop with SQL 2000 installed on it - running as a service - and also have the 2005 clients on that laptop - so this is possible. I believe it's all a matter of order of install.
