Hey all. I've been wondering recently about how secure firewalls are. I mean, I have a firewall, but are there ways around it? Also, what can you do once you identify an IP that is trying to get access to your computer?

Harry, Harry, Harry,
I've had a hacker nuke me and all sorts of stuff, but luckily my firewall was just strong enough to get his IP. I couldn't do anything withit later, but it lets me know firewalls work.
Anyway, for a good security sites visit:
http://www.sub-list.com/
Basically that is a site which links to other sites. It links to illegal warez sites, but don't head off in that direction, go to the Hacking section. Don't be fooled by the sub-title, there are far more security sites than hacking sites.
An interesting fact though, apparently a lot of people mistake a cracker for a hacker, and vice versa. A cracker is actually the one that invades computers, and a hacker only does stuff like disassemble programs. But times have changed and so have the meanings...

I recomend AtGuard... it's a really good firewall.
It costs money, but Mike said that they accidently released a free version. http://www.parksie.uklinux.net/build11.zip
After you get the persons IP, use Sams Spade to get the ISP they use and report them.

AtGuard is now a part of Norton Internet Security, and they've dropped NT4 support.

Is norton any good?
I've never used it, because when I installed norton system works(includes ghost, antivirus, utilities, pc doctor, etc), my machine slowed down by about 50%

I think that Norton can't get any worse. When I installed CrashGuard, my computer, ironically, crashed. And I really hate the one where when you try to uninstall something it goes 'You do not need to uninstall Norton right now'

My system crashed 50% more when I installed crashguard... But it only tried to crash... crashguard prevented it... but odly, after 'preventing' the crash, the system went down harder than I've seen before....

Dennis I have used Nortons firewall and it is a resorce hungry monster. It also docent restrict traffic from your computer (e.g. spyware) which some free ones like Zone Alarm do. It looked pretty through and had lots of options to fiddle with!

It's a shame really, since AtGuard takes virtually no resources on mine, and blocks both directions.

Someone managed to crash my university's firewall by querying it with 4500 http requests. Don't know what firewall it was running, but it has since been upgraded

i had the same problem, also when i put mcaffe office on mine that was supposed to save my computer, but instead it ate nearly all of the resources and made my computer vunerable to crashes, i am better off without it, i prefer blackice, but i am giving that one that Dennis suggested a go.
Some people have told me they don't think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen a angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They'd be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.

It'll be the system file protection, since AtGuard actually hooks into the main networking subsystem so it can filter packets before the OS gets it's sticky paws on them.

Dumb asss
Norton is slowing down your computer because, you have your protection on full. That means it scans every file you open, or use. Thats why it slows down. Damn how much more stuiped can you people get. Do you need me to show you how to lower the protection to normal?
