[RESOLVED] orkut vs forums
a few days ago i created a private forum(phpbb) for me and my classmates.
but sadly when i told them abt my forum, they kept asking me why a forum when there are communities like orkut.com r hi5 .i tried to explain them how good a forum can be but all went in vain ,can anyone give me ideas and advantages of having a forum rather than a community.
p.s:btw is there really a diff between a community and a forum ??

Re: orkut vs forums
well I'd have to say a forum is made for exchanging messages in an organized way between people (message board). A community is an extreem over-glorified forum with many added enhancments.

A forum is a community (community in the sense of a group of people) in a way, without the community the forum wouldn't have any posts. Tell them whats good about your forum is that your admin and if anything goes wrong you can step in and handle it. If it was on someone else's site then you can't.

It is all about preference. You can't force anyone to prefer one way of comunicating over an other one. I prefer forums, because that was what I started with first. Then again, my boss prefere mailing lists, because then he don't need to use his mouse. And so on. Usualy the first you started with is what you like (but not always though).

Re: orkut vs forums
its quite right that i cant force someone to change his/her preference as noteme said but atleast i expected my friends to visit my forum and post some stuff but all they did was register and do nothing .the reason they gave is that its too complex to use which i really dont understand .any way any other ideas so i can convince them to atleast use it!

Re: orkut vs forums
it happened with my friend also when he made one such small disc forum for us, but most of them were not interested, so they just registered and did nothing.
one way could be, first explore each and every functionality of both forum and orkut, and try to show the advantages of forum over orkut, interactively. tell them while showing them the advantages.
if you think there is something forum is missing but orkut have, and that seems to make orkut a big thing, try finding the alternative way in forum.
this is all you could do, students here do not want to try new things.
