Rankings of the Top Nine IDEs

I just got a link to study of 9 IDES and where they rank amoung IDEs and each other in my Devx Database Developer Newletter and thought I'd pass it along to those who may be interested, and who do not subscribe to this newsletter (if you are a database developer, you should...it is free).

You will need to complete a free registration in order to download the study which is in a PDF format. The IDES that were compared are:

BEA's Weblogic Workshop
Borlands JBuilder
Eclipse
IBM Rational Web Developer or Application Developer
IBM's Websphere Studio
Macromedia Studio MX
Microsoft Visual Studio .NET
Oracle Developer Suite
Sun Java Studio

The .NET IDE only came in first in one category.

Wouldn't it mainly be personal preferance, language and OS specific answers? To me it sounds like comparing pizzas. I like it plain with some hap, my X liked all sorts of bling bling on it....never agreed, so always ended up buying two...Isn't it all about finding the right tool for the job?? I suppose there is a way for me to agree with you more than I already agree with you, but right now, I can't think of any.

That was my reaction when I first read it...but I was curious to see what others might think.

To me the whole thing looked flawed. It leaves too many questions unanswered. Like eclipse for examle, is a DARN good IDE for Java, but the C# part is terrible and useless. They have not said anything about how they count this. They are neither saying anything if the users have used all of the IDEs or just one or a few. That will make a drastic change in the scores too. A new user will usualy love their IDE, and not really know what the IDE is lacking. Look a bit at it like you had to ask what Firefox had to offer that ie didn't have. If there was no Firefox, you would not have missed some of it futures, and maybe you still don't do it, since it was your first browser, and a user often returns to where it came from.


Since these answers are unanswered, and a million other small remarks I have, I won't let it change my mind a sec.

I'm completely in the same camp as NoteMe. Frankly, I'm not completely sure why they bothered to do this ranking in the first place.

Yes, I have read it and feel the same as you guys. They should not be comparing them like that. Maybe if they were comparing multiple IDEs that developed the same language then maybe it could be comparitive.

Are they comparing the J# part of .NET IDE with JBuilder and each part of the .NET IDE with its respective competitor?

I' am not surprised.
Few months ago when our group had semi-private meeting at MS one of the presenters mentioned how proud they are about their new VS 2005 IDE and then he asked for our "honest" opinion... 7 out of 10 of my colleagues (including myself) hate it for different reasons and btw since day 1 back in 2000. It's overcooked, SDI environment (is not available and I absolutely hate MDI when developing), unnecessary animations (stuff for kids mostly) and some other inconveniences. There was a minute of total silence...

But I agree about the preferences.

I like VS05. All it neeth tools they have added to do profiling, finding memory leaks and stuff like that. Really great tools, and that they finaly have fixed their code complete that really sucked in VS03. I also like that since you have sutch a big community around it, you can get so many plugins. Improved inteli sense, possebilities to draw UML diagrams and use/case diagrams and all sort of things and then automaticaly get code from the drawings... Sweet.. That would never happen in Emacs.

But OMG it is slow....thats the only thing I don't like about it.

My one major gripe about it the poor support for some of the new controls they added. For example, make an MDI app with the designer, then try to put the toolstrip in a toolstrip container - and watch your menus and toolstrip just.. go away forever.

I'm also not a big fan of how some of it just isn't WYSIWYG. I can drag/drop controls onto any kind of object with scrollbars (tab control, panel, etc) and at run time they can behave differently.

Some of us don't have that luxury... VS 05 is slow as hell here, but not as slow as '03. It'll be probably a year at least before I can upgrade, and I'm not doing it just for a sodding IDE

I've got to say I agree with what's been said. It's interesting to learn about features of IDEs that you might not have heard of, but really, you're not going to be able to develop C# in JBuilder are you?

There a few interesting comparisons, like ease of use. But comparing libraries and frameworks? What do they have to do with the IDE? And they lump compilers in there also, and compiled application performance

Overall, interesting, but ultimately pointless.
