Windows gets a protection error if a program writes to a protected area of memory, which is an area of memory Windows is using for itself. The reason this happens so frequently is hard to say, but it could be prevented from happening with a slightly different core design. It's complicated and I don't really understand it too well, so I won't try to explain how it could be avoided. It should never happen, but most applications have at least a couple of bugs in, and it can happen occasionally. The OS really ought to prevent it.
Linux isn't crash-free, just more stable.

nothing is
every operating system can crash. my school got one of those new mac g-4 they thought it was crash prof. so i said i bet i could crash it on my norm use. running 25 ei windows, dling 6 files, playing mp3's, and tested a mac program. it crashed really bad. haha showed them. linux is pretty good with that stuff. but i have linux on my old computer, that original ran win 3.1 and was upgraded 5 times and fixed once(i mean i had to reconnect every wire) i tryed running a program and it crashed bad.

ummmm.... If you read the thread the question asked was what makes windows crash, not how to make windows crash.

What makes windows crash?
Bill gates makes it crash so he can increase his revenue by introducing so-called better OS's. That why.
Tip of the Day
Did you know...

Every time Linux Crashes...There is a Core Dump.
Some time they are 50 MB !!!

Is Win2k free from crashes? I reckon it blows that they release a sub-standard pile of poo called Win98 that crashes at the drop of a hat (when something tries to write to a protected area of memory for example) and you have to pay s**t loads for NT or 2K which supposedly can handle this dumb situation. The number of blue screens i've had this week is starting to rival the miles from here to the Sun. And it's ALWAYS got something to do with that "buggier than an ants nest" app called IE5.5
Another thing, old gatesy is starting to p*ss me off with this non-copying version of apps. I mean, what are we ganna do if we actually have to pay for this crappy OS?? I REALLY hope NOBODY in the world buys Whistler then it will show that muther we ain't ganna take his god damn s**t.
ARE YOU WITH ME PEOPLE!!?!? We can do to Msoft what he did to IBM. Lets go!!!

what did he do to IBM? IBM is just a type of computer 'main frame', the system in how it works, not an Operating System

OS/2 was a joint development between ibm and MS, and was meant to be the next step from DOS. ibm did not want to aim at the 386 chip for fear of loss of sales from their mini division and thus loss their lead in the PC wars and notably the OS wars. MS was developing windows at the same time with Gates making the decision to go full ahead with Windows after the frustration of working with Big Blue.

Wow, what a friend, he is going to fight you if you don't try to make me feel bad.
And what is he doing over at your house so late anyway? I didn't think teenage boys really had sleep overs anymore, unless they were... you know....gay...

At least I got a real girl friend. Not one you talk to on-line.

I am not denying I look at porn, and I am not admitting it. I am only saying, I am tired of getting into trouble when my brother does it. And what makes you think I can't get any? What makes you think I even want any? I'm 14 years old, and not prepared to have a baby or contract an STD, I think I'm going to wait a few more years.

I don't understand what you're saying.
First, you say I look at gay porn sites, then you say I have an online girlfriend. Something isn't right here.
But, of course, I don't look at gay porn sites, and I don't have an online girlfriend. I don't have a 'real' girlfriend, but I could. There are quite a few girls that wouldn't mind going out with me, but I am waiting for somebody in particular. A girl who is perfect, sweet, funny, and smart. I have found her, but I don't spend any time at all with her, because I am not in a single class with her. I her to know me better before I ask her out.

I cannot beleive you are denying looking at porn, after accusing me of it.
If you look at porn it means it want it but cann't have it.
What is that supposed to mean?
And, I never admitted to looking at porn.

It is spelled Puerto Rican.
Anyhow, she is 'hot'?
Is that all that matters? You did not say how nice, funny, or smart she is. And you never said how happy she makes you. Are you only going out with her because she makes you horny?
You freak.

So, she listens to horrible music, can only program in DOS, has a very sick mind, and can draw?
I think you made her up. Most of all, because I have never found a girl who thinks swinging a dead baby around by it's testicles is funny.
